The Khao San Road and the streets leading off it have the cheapest
hotels. You might find a double with bath and aircon for as little as
US$10.

This is not the cheapest but I have used the new world lodge hotel on
four seperate occasions - it meets all you requirements - is situated
about 5 minutes walk from Khao San Road with plenty of local street
side restraunts to eat at - without being right in the centre of all
the Khao San activities. A double room wil cost about 800 Baht and
reservations can be made over the Internet - see URL below

Asia Hotel is not bad: http://www.asiahotel.co.th/

Best part is the sky train is just outside.

We
stayed at Peachy Guesthouse for 350 bahts a night and it had air con and
ensuite. Clean tidy and bigger than most rooms in the backpacker area.

It is in the lonely planet Asia on a shoestring. Was there in Jan 2004
and it was a good location nr Kho Soam rd (excuse spelling)

If you fancy getting away from the Khoa San ghetto then try Thewet
(Tay-Wait), the area near the national library. Many find Tavee Guest
House to their liking
