Iberia launch takes on low-cost rivals
By Leslie Crawford in Madrid
Published: April 27 2006 03:00 | Last updated: April 27 2006 03:00

Iberia, the Spanish flag carrier, will launch a low-cost airline in
October to compete with rivals such as EasyJet, Ryanair and Air Berlin,
low-cost carriers that have cornered almost one-third of airline travel
to Spain.

Iberia said yesterday its low-cost offshoot - yet to be named - would
be based in Barcelona, the destination of 40 per cent of low-cost
flights to Spain. Iberia will contribute €24m ($30m) to the new
airline's €50m in start-up capital.

Four domestic partners, including ACS, Spain's largest builder, and
Quercus, a private equity fund, will provide the remaining capital.

A survey published this week by the Institute of Tourism Studies in
Spain showed that low-cost airlines brought 1.2m passengers to Spain in
the first quarter of 2006 - 31 per cent of the total - and a 6 per cent
increase over 2005.

Traditional airlines, by contrast, have lost market share.

"We cannot leave this important market to our low-cost rivals," Iberia
said.

Iberia said the new airline might seek a public listing in three to
four years, depending on its financial performance. It will initially
have five aircraft, building up to 30 by 2008.

The new company is seeking slots in Europe, particularly in Germany and
the UK, and will be attending a global auction of landing slots to be
held in Vancouver in June.

Iberia said the new low-cost carrier would be a stand-alone company
with independent management, "so as not to contaminate the new airline
with Iberia's higher cost structure".

Nevertheless, the launch of a Barcelona-based low-cost carrier is
expected to allow Iberia to concentrate on its Madrid hub and its most
profitable routes, especially long-haul flights to the US and Latin
America.

Iberia said it would keep flying to European destinations, as they were
important feeder routes that brought passengers for its long-haul
flights.

One quarter of Iberia's long-haul passengers come from outside Spain.
But the company said it would gradually eliminate its non-profitable
domestic routes to cut costs.

I think the reporter mistyped "so as not to contaminate Iberia's brand by
association".

Iberia will have merged or gone forever by 2010.

2 Weeks ago BA and IB had a SECRET meeting between the senior managment
http://blogs.periodistadigital.com/a...4/24/title_577

Nothing have transcende , IB shares surge when the news transcended.

IB is one of the very few european airlines that doesn't need to merge
or anything . 11th consecutive years of profits ( 400 Millions euros
net profit in 2005) while the rest of airlines are struggling . More
merit with the extremly competitive Spanish market .

This move it's a STRIKE BACK , against all those LCC from Europe
damaging Spanish domesstic market . Until now IB was only substaining
strikes from LLC ... ..

Now IB Strikes Back.

IB have a very strong CASH position .. and it's starting to put at work
..

With 30 planes before 2008 it will make blood in some LCC's .. .

Air Mediterraneo , or same variation of that will be the name . This
year to enter operation .

Air Nostrum ( best european regional carrirer) will carry most of the
managment .

IBERIA could place an order during Berlin's Air Show (taking place in
May 2006). IB would order 20 A350-900 + 10 options. Those would be for
a long-haul fleet renewal. Also a couple of A380-800, in this case
leased to ILFC .

By the way TODAY , ANOTHER Airbus 340-600 enters the IB fleet .

"Iberia receives its 13th Airbus A-340/600"

Madrid, 26 of April of 2006

The 352-seat aircraft comes equipped with Iberia's new Business Plus
class, for enhanced service and comfort on intercontinental routes.
The Spanish company has named the aircraft Pío Baroja, in a tribute to
one of Spain's literary greats.
Iberia has just taken delivery of a new Airbus A-340/600, from the
Airbus Toulouse plant, which will be used on the company's
intercontinental routes to Latin America, the United States, and South
Africa. It is the Spanish airline's 31st Airbus A-340 and the 13th
600 model.

The acquisition of the new aircraft, registered as EC-JPU, is part of
the company's programme to replace its older aircraft with the latest
models that offer the best performance, while used less fuel, operating
more quietly, and emitting less pollution.

The new 352-seat Airbus A340/600 comes equipped with the new Business
Plus section, Iberia's upgraded business class on intercontinental
flights. It features exclusively-designed seats that unfold into
completely flat beds within a rigid pod that ensures both comfort and
privacy. The new seats also have a dual adjustable back cushion with a
massage function, adjustable head rests and arm rests, and extendible
leg rests. A digital system memorizes the passenger's preferred seat
settings.

The Business Plus section also features the most modern communications
and entertainment systems, operated with an individual touch-screen.
Passengers can send SMS and e-mail messages anywhere in the world in
under 15 seconds, and speak on an individual satellite telephone.

Business Plus passengers can choose from a variety of interactive
computer games, first-run movies and quality documentaries on 26 video
channels. In addition, there are 12 audio channels. During the flight,
real-time images taken with a video camera mounted on aircraft's tail
assembly are available on the individual screen and the general cabin
screens.

Iberia has named this aircraft Pío Baroja in a tribute to one of the
most important 20th C. Spanish novelists.

IBERIA brand it's moving toward long range travel .

Because of the development of the Spanish High Speed Network ( AVE )
most domestic routes will cease to be profitable . With an AVE
Madrid-Barcelona for around 50 Euros reaching the center of the city ,
this domestic route for Iberia is doomed.

Malaga-Madrid is the 3rd domestic route for Iberia. Of course when next
year , 2007 , also enter service ... who is going to take the plane ?
while the train let you in central Madrid ?

Also the LCC is reshaping things .. so IBERIA will concentrate on it's
LONG RANGE ROUTES , and some profitable european routes ONLY FROM
MADRID BARAJAS , and the short routes and european NOT departing from
MADRID BARAJAS , will go for both , Air Nostrum and this new LCC AIR
MEDITERRANEA.

Also IBERIA will lease 4 Airbuses 380-800 !!!

They will cover the MADRID-BUENOS AIRES ( MAD-EZE) , MADRID-NEW YORK
(MAD-JFK)

Still the route MAD-MEXICO cannnot be used with the A-380 because MEX
is not ready yet for the A-380.

The announcment will be made next month in Berlin Air Show . Also 20
A-350 options.

Iberia launch takes on low-cost rivals
By Leslie Crawford in Madrid
Published: April 27 2006 03:00 | Last updated: April 27 2006 03:00

Iberia, the Spanish flag carrier, will launch a low-cost airline in
October to compete with rivals such as EasyJet, Ryanair and Air Berlin,
low-cost carriers that have cornered almost one-third of airline travel
to Spain.

IBERIA European flights already feel like 'low cost' airline flights. BA
code share many flights from UK to Spain and I know who I would prefer to
fly with. BA have reduced fares to compete with Easyjet & Ryanair but
without jeopardising standards. Frankly IBERIA need a new 'brand' and
management to even try to compete in UK and Germany.

I flew with Iberia from LHR to Barcelona at Easter last year.
I was flabergasted to be offered a menu (like on a budget airline) and be
asked to cough up 5 Euros or whatever for a bocadillo de jamon.
