YHA vs. VIP Discounts
Do either membershipss either discounts on train passes and airfares?
What kind of dicounts can you get with YHA in Canada and the US? I heard that the YHA non-hostel discounts are for places so out of the way, they're not worth using. Comments? |

YHA in Canada is worth it for the booking, not for much else - 5-10% if you think about it and ask for it and do your homework in advance. In a word, use it for the basic feature (room), not for the discounts. |

In Canada the site is - www.hihostels.ca In USA the site is - www.hiusa.org In NZ the site is - www.stayyha.com and Australia the site is - www.yha.com.au (if you are interested in any other countries you can look at the the Hostelling International site which has links to all national affiliates - www.hihostels.com) On each of the sites you will find a link to the discounts page where they list national and local discounts available to members, there are so many it is impossible to list them all here. But they are not necessarily in out of the way locations as an example in Canada selecting BC then looking at Vancouber there are discounts for the CN IMAX at Canada Place, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Lookout as examples all of which are definitely not out of the way places. (if you check these out you will see the discounts are IMAX -$2.50 off, Capilano - student rate ($5.45 less than adult rate), Lookout 50% 0ff ($5.00 discount) even doing just these 3 activities in Vancouver will give you a CDN$13 total discount which is already a good way towards rhe joining fee. Looking at Sydney you get discounts at 82 places including Oceanworld, the aquarium, the powerhouse museum, IMAX, Sydney Observatory, Sydney Tower, so it shouldn't take long for you to be able to save more than the joining fee. I hope this is of help Ian |

Now if only the backwards Immigration Department would stop holding up my visa application just because I'm disabled, I might start to get excited about my trip. |
