Default Buying electronics in Bangkok

Hi!
I'll have the chance to stay 3 days in Bangkok next week.
As I heard that's one of the best places to buy electronics I'd like to find
a good and cheap palm or multimedia such Archos or Creative....
Any suggestion is welcome........
Thank you!!!!

Helen

Probably it's not such a good place.... You might have guarantee
problems (i.e. a Thai guarantee is useless in Italy or wherever), and
electronics are such a global commodity, that I doubt you will save
more than a few euros, and it might even be more expensive. I bought a
camera in Bangkok a few years back, and wasted plenty of time on taxi
fares, going round different places, and would have been a lot better
off buying the item at home from the internet, doing research, and
getting a good price.

Hello.
I am in Bkk once or twice a year. At MBK or Panthip Plaza, prices are
very comparable to those I encounter here in Europe. For the things you
are interested in, I even take the train and go to "rue Montgallet" in
Paris, enormous choice and prices like in China...
So, finally, it is not a good idea to buy electronic devices, save the
occasional memory card, in Bangkok.
Don't forget customs and guarantee.
But, DO visit the two places I mentioned, just for fun.

I've no idea of prices in Italy. BUT!! My experience is that it is cheaper
to buy electronics in Australian discount outlets than in Panthip Plaza, or
MBK or Chatuchak in Bangkok. PLUS!! There's the issue of warranties.

I believe it's almost better to buy at discount outlets in the USA, Canada,
UK and NZ also.

As the other posters have said, there is no advantage in buying electronics
in Bangkok, and you do have the disadvantage of warranty problems etc.

Instead, do all your clothes shopping in Bangkok and save money that way.

I lived in Bangkok for a year, and it was never known to be a cheap place to
buy electronics compared to other places. The other issue in Bangkok is
grey market and warranties.

Helen:

I have to echo the sentiments of the other posters. I was in Vietnam a
couple of years back and figured it the same way you appear to have.

Not so...

I was starting to wonder if everytime they saw me walk in they were
whipping out the OTHER price list. There was no difference in price
whatsoever. In fact, some of the prices appeared to be higher. I
guess that was the "novelty of buying it in Asia" tax.

Particularly strange when everything else cost so much LESS.

I'd think twice. Especially with the warranty issues that other
posters have mentioned.
