I'd definitely recommend the Best Western Hibiscus at 1313 Simonton
Street. Its a great place and its in a great location.
For things to do there are so many - first I'd recommend looking at
the listings in the AAA guide book for a lot of great ideas. There's the
butterfly museum and conservatory on Duval, Hemingway House, light house
across the street, Audobon house, Mel Fisher treasure museum, Key Deer
National Wildlife Refuge, Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden, Truman Little
White House Museum and Tour, Seaplanes of Key West will take you to Fort
Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas Natl park, Fort Zachary taylor (both the
fort and the beach nearby), Key West Art and History Museum, Keys Eco
Discovery Center (same Road as to Fort Taylor), and many other things to
do

Great response to the OP, but man, these groups don't have the traffic
they once had...

I just dropped in to ask a few questions about Key West and lo and behold...

We've never been but wife and I were thinking about driving down from
GA maybe next week to Key West for a few days. Have you taken
the ferry to Dry Tortugas? How is it? Worth the $? Uh, also, about
the homosexual factor...you may be gay yourself and we don't hate you
for it if so, but the fact is, we don't care to be the only (or one of the
very few) heteros there. I've heard that lately the homo fabric
is breaking up a bit down there. I'm trying to decide if it's worth
the 800-mile drive down. Thanks.

Sexual deviancy---the NEW "normal", apparently. Some things SHOULD be kept
in the closet!!!

Yes, homosexuality was removed from the mental disorders
list at about the same time they started telling us that race
was only a social contruct. Politics does make poor science
doesn't it.

Some things SHOULD be kept in the closet!!!

Yep, I frankly don't care what they do in private,
but the thought of half-naked guys playing assgrab
and giving me the eyes everywhere doens't sound too appealing.

You shouldn't worry.
You are ugly and obese.

That would be what the mirror tells YOU.

It's a long trip, you'll burn up much of the day. Whether it is
worth
it is hard to say. Probably depends upon what you think you'll
do when you get there.

Ha! I wouldn't worry. First of all, there are the cruise ships.
They
are loaded with people with which you'll be comfortable. Second,
other than a few specific places, you'll be in the majority by a long
shot. Quite honestly I'd be more worried about the apparent endless
bachelor parties that seem to be wandering around. Oh, and if you
need any T-shirts......

Quite apart from that issue, the drive is what would concern me.
I live in Orlando and I fly down. That drive on US1 is long and
in many places 2 lanes wide.

The pics look nice. We thought maybe just riding on the ferry might
be kind of relaxing too.

Yep, that's what I figured. I guess hitting a Key now & then
would break the monotony. I did want to stop and see the
memorial to the victims of the 1935 hurricane. BTW, I've
snorkled off Key Largo, but that's as far as I've gotten.
