Austin - night life + sites question
What's THE best place to go to on a Saturday night? A place with live
music, hopefully with an authentic Texan atmosphere. Also, what are the recommended sites in Austin, for someone who's coming for only 2 days? |

Just walk up and down it until you hear music you like and then go in. Also, what are the recommended sites in Austin, for someone who's coming for only 2 days? Texas state capitol, UT campus (well, I love colleges.....) |

If you like jazz, you should check out some of the following: Elephant Room, 315 Congress Avenue (downtown), Austin TX 512-473-2279 www.natespace.com/elephant.htm - An old brick basement with a smattering of tables, the Elephant Room presents jazz most night of the week. Regulars include many of Austin's top jazz musicians. Cedar Street Courtyard, 208 West Fourth Street, Austin TX 512-495-9669 Billing itself as "King of the Gin Joints" the Cedar Street Courtyard features a sunken courtyard that features a stage at one end and an indorr bar on either side. This is a beautiful setting, when the weather permits, for its 6-8 jazz happy hours (usually a piano player is featured). Later in the night, there are full jazz bands. Mercury at Jazz, 214 East Sixth Street, Austin TX 512-478-6372 Showcasting local jazz/funk/hip-hop upstarts, along with occasional name touring acts. Ringside at Sullivan's, 300 Colorado Street, Austin TX 512-474-1870 Sophisticated, upscale jazz lounge adjoining the swank Sullivan's Steakhouse. Ritz Lounge, 320 East Sixth Street, Austin TX 512-474-2270 Austin's grandest venue with its box seating ans stadium-style setup. Ther isn't a bad seat in the house. Not a jazz club, strictly speaking. FOr more clubs and info check JazzPolice.com Jazz Police is a jazz and travel information website. Jazz Police has a mission of promoting the best of live jazz in local communities nationwide, particularly for travelers. This service should be of great benefit to traveling jazz fans who are looking to enjoy great live jazz when on the road. It also helps local jazz clubs and restaurants by sending more out-of-town dollars to their businesses. By helping people find live music we hope to help increase demand for live jazz so, as Dewey Redman recently said, “musicians can keep appearing and stop disappearing”. What about the bats?
Thanks, also, I understand that this time of year the bats fly at
dusk, and you can watch them from the Congress bridge. My question - at what time approximately do they start flying, and where exactly is the best spot to watch them (which side of the river?). The Austin American-Statesman has a wonderful viewing area behind their offices. Lots of grass to sit on, and some nice educational exhibits. You could spend part of the bat flight there and part up on the bridge looking down on the bats as they leave. Here's info: http://www.batcon.org/discover/congress.html. Patty |
