Default Philly to Montreal "Don't Miss" Sights.

In two weeks my girlfriend and I will be travelling from Philly to
Montreal, probably along I-81. Any recommended "don't miss" sights
along the way? In Montreal, we'll hit the major tourist spots, but
does anybody have any recommendations for other places to visit that,
for one reason or another, we might not want to miss. Thanks...er,
merci.

Just north of Philadelphia is Bird-In-Hand, Intercourse and other towns
in Pennsylvania Dutch Amish Country. Most towns have farm markets,
quilts, antiques. Some even have horse and carriage rides which can
be sort of a romantic step back in time. http://www.800padutch.com/
Check out the website and plan your own stops.

The more interesting ride is probably I87 (NYS Thruway) - Northway.
It depends on what you're looking for, but there's a lot of stuff in
the Hudson Valley and eastern Adirondacks. Just offhand:

Kykuit (Rockefeller Estate)
West Point
FDR National Historic Site
Vanderbilt Mansion NHS
Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome
Olana (Frederic Church house)
Saratoga
Lake George
Fort Ticonderoga
Lake Placid

If you do decide to go the I81 route, Ottawa is definitely worth a day
or two. Also, the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York
(http://abm.org/) is an interesting stop. More places along the Saint
Lawrence River:

We started further East, at Boston and went via the White
and Green Mountains. However, towards the end of the trip to
Montreal we stayed overnight in Burlington, a lovely college
town on the lake, and then used the back roads to hug the
lakeside then go via the Hero Islands through the top of the
lake and via a tiny border crossing north of the isles into
Canada. We enjoyed that part of the trip, seeing back
country and tiny towns.

I agree that I-87 is a nicer route, and north of Albany it's extremely
scenic. If you don't mind a few tolls, then the Taconic Parkway from NYC to
Albany is about the prettiest road I ever saw. They took the term 'parkway'
to heart.

But its curves are too sharp for safe driving south of I-84. Best to
leave the NYC area on another road and take the Taconic from I-84 north.

The Saratoga battlefield isn't far from I-87. Nor is the Ausable Chasm.
