Default Times letters: airport chimes -- Geneva vs. Heathrow

September 12, 2003
Beautiful noise
From Ms Alison Wells

Sir, How nice to know that at least in one area we outclass the Swiss.

Mrs Carolyn Lewis-Barclay (letter, September 8; see also letters,
September 9) writes that at Geneva airport the public announcement
chimes play the first five notes of How Much is That Doggy in the
Window? I am pleased to report that Heathrow airport's chimes play the
first three notes of Mozart's Mass in D major, K194.

In my days of touring as a member of the BBC Singers, several of us
could be heard to chorus "Kyrie Eleison" at the sound of those chimes,
to the surprise of other passengers.

At Birmingham New Street (and many other places) it's a 1-3-5-6 motif. I
always think of "Jerusalem".
