The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is where the action takes
place. Between the months of July and October, with a lemming-like
instinct, finally gelled into dusty, snorting mass movement, the
wildebeests leave the withering plains of the Serengeti in favour of
the lush green grass of the Mara. They arrive in July and August,
pouring dramatically across the Sand River and into the eastern side of
the reserve around Keekorok, where they gradually munch their way
westwards in a milling, unsettled mass, finally turning south again in
October. With them, of course, come the predators, the lions hunt the
weak or unwary in prides while the spotted hyenas pick them off in
packs. Noisy zebras break the pattern of endless black and brown as
fellow travellers and vultures sit watchfully on branches. Half a
million wildebeest calves are born in January and February before the
migration; two out of three perish before returning to the Serengeti.

All this can best be seen from the vantage point of our Safari minivans
or 4 x 4 Landcruisers. Safaris are organised specifically around the
migration and there are numerous camps and lodges that give you the
chance to either observe in style or rough it in a tent.
