Default Need to find classy but affordable hotels with onsen in Japan!

We're heading off to Japan for two weeks in October, and we're looking
for recommendations for interesting but affordable hotels/ryokan.
After Tokyo (where our accommodation is already fixed), we'll be going
to Hakone, Kyoto and Nagasaki, and I'd like to get to Mount Aso, but
that's not a definite.

What we'd really like is to find hotels or ryokan that feature outdoor
onsen pools in beautiful natural settings, but which don't cost a
bloody fortune!

Is such a thing possible to achieve?

I'm not sure if I would call it "classy", but the Hotel Kowakien in Hakone
is reasonable.
The attraction is that it is right next to the "Yunessan" spa resort, which
has lots of onsen-style outdoor pools which you can use wearing swimming
costumes. There are also traditional onsens if that is what you prefer, and
the hotel itself has an indoor onsen.
