I am looking to take my first visit to Hua Hin....but have no

idea
where to stay!
I was considering the Hilton but was told that the beach is

cleaner,
quieter(less jet skis)further out.
During the day we like to sunbathe, read and swim in the sea and

wander
to a beach bar for lunch.
At night we like a good choice of restaurants and bars. So

anywhere
up
to 15 minutes tuk-tuk/taxi out of the centre could work.
I would really appreciate some advice.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

I can recommend the Marriott Hotel, quiet, cleaner beach, and just

a 5
min tuk-tuk drive from the city center. More expensive than the
Hilton, but better value for money than, say ,the Sofitel.

Trond

better than Sofitel??????????????, compare for example the small and

crowded
garden of the Marriott with the beautiful gardens of the Sofitel

Having stayed at both hotels within the last 6 months, I believe
Marriott is better value for money. We had booked one of their
bungalows for the Heineken jazz festival last June, and kicked up a
fuzz when we found it to be mosquito infested and reeking of mold -
that "old" smell you sometimes get in cheaper hotels. Management gave
us an upgrade to a luxury room in the main building at no extra cost
(which was very decent of them), and that room was superb. Not too
impressed with their swimming pool either, the whole pool area could
do with a renovation, IMHO.

Both my wife and I have found the Marriott to be more what we are
looking for. You are of course entitled to your opinion. As for
gardens, yes - the Sofitel has a nice garden. Excellent point!

the site of asia-hotels.com mentioned:
"Guests are advised that the Colonial Wing (Zone A) will be partially closed
from 18 April to 31 August 2004 to give way for the renovation of the
guestroom interiors. Special measures are being taken to avoid disturbance
to guests. Working hours is from 9:30 am to 6 pm"

inspection report bij asia-hotels.com:
"Oozing with history this is one of THE hotels in Asia let alone Hua Hin.
Built in 1923 as the Railway Hotel it has been beautifully restored by the
Accor/Sofitel chain. The whole hotel offers the charm of a bygone colonial
era from the lawns to afternoon tea. Conveniently located right in the
middle of town but shielded from the masses by wonderful topiary gardens.
The tall ceiling rooms are straight of the 30s with balconies and period
furniture. The original Railway Hotel wing has the best rooms as they are
bigger and have taller ceilings but rather oddly they do not have all the
amenities such as tea and coffee - these will be supplied if you ask. The
later colonial and garden wing rooms are slightly darker and smaller but
still are good. Most rooms have been refurbished in the last three years but
some are still to do. These are a little run down and certainly not up to
Sofitel standard. Six of these rooms from 306-11 are above the lobby and are
the best rooms as they have huge balconies...needless to say they are very
popular and hence they are never empty for refurbishment. The hotel fronts
the best beach in Hua Hin which by Asia standards is not best but is
presentable. The hotel also offers 3 swimming pools and an excellent array
of facilities especially for families. Note families with young kids should
stay in deluxe rooms which have twin Queen size beds. A wide variety of
restaurants offer good food but at 5 star prices, those wishing to economise
can easily stroll into town. No doubt the best offering in Hua Hin."

The Sofitel is classy, extensive grounds, beautiful pool, - historic -
right on the beach AND an easy walk to the Night Market and restaurants by
the hundred!!

Thanks Mate,
Is the beach and sea nice around the Sofitel?
I take it at the upper price range you rate the Sofitel higher than
the Hilton or the Marriott?
I like the idea of the Marriott being a little further out but not if
the pool area/gardens are crowded as has been suggested.

Yeah! Beach is OK - not brilliant, and because it is so close to the town -
often 'busy'!!

Hi Sandy,
My price range would be at the higher end to take in a 4 star or a 5 star hotel.

I believe the sea is cleaner the further out you go. Also less
rocks - easy to cut your feet closer to town. None of the hotels can
be said to be crowded, although the Sofitel does indeed cover vastly
more ground than the Mariott. If you want the historical "touch" to
your vacation, choose the Sofitel, if comfort (and isolation) is more
important to you, stay at the Marriott. I have a feeling you would be
reasonably content whichever you choose. :-)
