From: "Nick Chan" Newsgroups: soc.culture.china,rec.travel.asia seems that HK or KL's peking duck is better Chou Doffu (the most awful smelling food I've ever encountered). The word "chou" should give you a clue. It means "smells bad". |

What food do you think of when you think of Beijing?
Because they have to say, "Cheese", when they are having their pictures
taken. J. "yaofeng" wrote in message oups.com... Why do westerners like stinky food like certain cheeze? |

Sichuan ? Good luck to you. I was there for 3 weeks and lost weight. First night "hot-pot" was not too bad but so much "oil" in the soup ! Lost weight? That's good. How do you think most Chinese got that thin? |

J.Venning wrote: Correction, they do. I don't mean to contradict you just for the sake of it, but the topic had intrigued me for quite a while, so I took the trouble of asking my acquaintances in Beijing about dog meat. Yes, dog meat is served as a dish, but only few specialised restaurants offer them, and they use they meat from dogs which are specially raised for food - chow-chow - not just any ordinary house-pet dogs. No, I didn't bother to taste it, although whilst in Chicago last summer, I did taste "Cajon alligator" at the "Taste of Chicago" food fair - nuttin' to it, could have been pork for all I know. Whilst we are on the subject of food (I love eating), why hasn't anyone here condemned the eating of frogs, snails (yuk!), or even raw oysters in the Western World ? Because frogs, snails and raw oyster are not pets? Pet status is something determined by human choice. It's not some sort of moral quality of an animal species. Sheep, goats, horses, rabbits, fish, birds, and pigs are quite commonly kept as pets, but that fact doesn't appear to render eating them morally reprehensible. cheers, --mt. |

Each culture, each nation and their respective social strata, has its
own definition of what is palatable and what is not, and we in turn should not condemn or ridicule one another for the differences. This thread was started by that anti-social nincompoop, who thinks it fun to take continual jibes in cyber space at the Chinese people. No prizes in guessing what fate he would meet if any of us were to meet him on the street. J. "Market Theory" wrote in message ups.com... Pet status is something determined by human choice.
