I've done the Krakow/Oswiecim/Wieliczka/Zakopane gig before, so I can pass on that destination. What are the other "must sees" that I should try to include in my trip. I would highly recommend a trip aroud Lithuania. It's not very touristy, cheap, reasonably well developed, and there are some awesome things to see like Vilnius, Hill of Crosses, Stalin World, and the Curonian Spit. Milan is bloody awful, and so we found a beautiful little village about 15-25 mins from Genova, and got a nice appartment with a sea view. The lifestyle is a million times better than Milan, with sea and mountains. The next town along is Recco, which has the best focaccia on earth, and the town after that is the incredibly beautiful Camogli. Cinque Terre is not far away, and Portofino is also close. Try: Warsaw - Torun - Gdansk - Malbork - (Frombork) - Mazurian lakes - Lithuania (Vilnius)... depend on what transport will you have I would add Gniezno, Lednica, Pobiedziska, Poznan, and in Mazovia - Lowicz and Zelazowa Wola (and maybe Nieborów/Arkadia). It will be a bit risky what I'll write here, but, well... PL, and especially Warsaw is in a way something you can't just see in order to get to know. I would recomend Museum of Uprising, wich is visited by Poles only although Poles know more/less the history. I couldn't see foreign tourists there. In LT Troki (Trakai) is a must see, btw THERE is (or maybe was) a rastaurant, that you can really complain at pierogi. Kaunas is worth seeing and, well, places like Kryziu Kalnas (Hill of Crosses) - depend on you |

Usually referred to as Trakai, about an hour from Vilnius by train or bus. The castle is absolutely outstanding, set in the midst of a lake (upon which swans placidly glide). Very popular for wedding photos etc. It isn't a ruin, and contains two very fine museums. Trakai is still the home of the Kairites, the descendents of a group of tartars that once constituted the personal bodyguard of the Grand Dukes. They follow a 'heretical' version of judaism. Their prayer house (Known as the 'kinnessa') is still in the town, and can sometimes be visited. Dr. Barry Worthington Mariampol Church and old station Kalwaria Jew town Druskienniki Health resort. Try googling "karaite trakai" for more. ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/ for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |
