I received the following tidbit in a newsletter a local travel
consultant sends and also writes for the Anchorage Daily News. I know
this subject has come up more than once.

I do not work for Avis in any way, only deal with them if we have to
audit them for the Airport (work for State DOT who manages the Whittier
tunnel and the International Airports)

1. WE TRY HARDER--in WHITTIER! That's right! Now you can pick up a
rentalcar in beautiful, downtown WHITTIER! Why? Silly, that's where many
of the CRUISE SHIPS are docking this year! Here's what they've got:

a. 4x4 SUVs (N-o-o-o, Silly! You still have to use the tunnel. Driving
over the Portage Pass is STRICTLY prohibited! HA!). Also Mini-vans,
sedans and trucks.

b. Mini-lease long-term rentals (30 days to 11 months).

c. One-way rentals available to/from Anchorage (pesky drop charge is
additional).
