Thanks Max (from italy) Are you trying to get there quickly, or take your time to visit and look at the scenery? There is some two-lane each-way highway between Sydney and Brisbane, but most of the road is one-lane each-way road with speed limits varying from 40-60km/hr through each town to 100-110km/h on the open road. Considering that it's also the wrong side of the road for you, it's unlikely you would average better than 75km/h for the whole trip - so even if you took the shorter way via the inland it will still take 30-35 hours of continuous driving. If you're trying to get there in a hurry - fly. If you're going to drive then I'd take a bit of time to stop along the way and suggest you take at least a week - or more. In August it will be cooler at the start in Sydney, with temperature ranging from 10c at night to 18C during the day, but it will get progressively warmer as you drive North to the Tropics. [Max, please ignore this. It's just a little bit of fun.]

If he just drives on the same side as they do in Italy, he will be perfectly fine! :-) BTW, I think Sidney to Cairns is quite a bit more than 2,800 K, and I doubt that his car insurance will cover most of the trip! :-) |

After all, I didn't spell Roma, Firenze or Venezia correctly when I first asked questions on rec.travel.europe. There's been a few upgrades to the road since then, but they would shave minutes off the time rather than hours. The only reason to drive would be to see things along the way. The road gets boring after the first six hours, so it's probably only worth doing if there's a few places you want to see along the way. Work out how many places, how long you want to spend at each one.... then add 35 hours for driving time, divide by about 11 for the number of hours of daylight and you should get an idea of the time you need. No argument - except that the driver is from a left-hand drive country and not familiar with the road. I drive it at least four times annually.
