Default NZ Currency change

Hi!

Does anybody know if it is better to bring traveller checks, cash or
use an ATM machine in New Zealand to get local currency?

Thanks!

Hi!

Depends on a number of things:

ATM:
Although the banks initially use the interbank rate to convert to your
currency, they may well then reduce that by a percentage which is in effect
their 'fee' (actually for doing nothing). This will reduce the exchange rate
to almost the same as what you would get if you exchanged local currency for
NZ dollars before you leave.
Travellers Checks:
Again, depends on whether your bank charges a fee for them. If not, when
cashing them in NZ they charge a fee of (If I remember correctly) of 30
cents. Not a lot, if you are cashing a large check.
Cash:
Converting local currency to NZ dollars in NZ will be at the 'tourist' rate,
which is the interbank rate less a percentage for their commission. (another
rip off).

Suggest you talk to your bank before you go to find out what the charges are
for ATM and travellers checks and then make your decision.
