Not any time that I'VE gone there from the US, and that's been several
times in the past 10 years.

The problem is the country
to the south of us. They are talking about requiring passports for everyone
entering the US.

If you're TALKING about the US, which is very unclear from what you
said, it supposedly isn't requiring passports NOW. But it may in the future.

I think that a lot of people in the lower 48 are going to get unpleasantly
surprised if they fail to get a passport now, before they become mandatory.
Not only are they expensive, but getting them takes time...so two weeks for
departure won't hack it.

Well most of you all got on with the "it", no big deal like I said I
have about 40 different vacation guides, AAA, Milepost, name it I
probably have "it". Which one I read I am not going back through trying
to find it. But I received the answer I wanted, "Passport" is it. And
DH and I both have those. When I read about having to have two forms
Passport and birth certificate, this made no sense, as we needed the
birth certificate to get our Passport. Problem solved. Thank you. I am
waiting for my Milepost for 2006 which I received notification it
should be ready for mailing on Mar 1st. Most of the literature stated
just a Passport, but when I read the other that is when I became
confused. LOL

The government folks in Washington State and BC are moaning about the
economic impact of requiring a passport to enter the US, but IMHO the
Department of Homeland Security holds all the cards and this will soon be a
done deal.

I was listening to a US official on a (Canadian) radio talk show recently
and he made it clear there is a reference to an alternate piece of
identification that may be made available soon that would also qualify for
passage into (or back into - for US citizens) the US. He also figured this
new document would be much cheaper than a passport.

I still don't understand why the NEXUS card would not qualify given the
security checks that are done just to get one. It seams to me it is harder
to get a NEXUS card than a passport?

Its not just Washington and BC, but every border State and Province, and any
State that does major trading with Canada.

I guess they just want everyone to have passports, just like the 9/11 terrorists
had.

Not exactly. We want only non terrorists to get passports. Remember
that the Clinton administration did nothing to stop terrorists
from entering the country, training on how to fly airplanes into
large buildings, and doing so ... EVEN THOUGH they actually had the
information to stop the attacks, and the Bush administration had not had
time to change the rules.

Today we recognize the danger, and espoecially not that Canada
is no longer seriously aiding us in our security needs.

Right. Doesn't matter that it all happened on Dubya's watch. It MUST
have been Clinton's fault!

I prefer to believe Al Franken.

That's ABSURD!

It takes TIME for a new administration to change things ...
usually YEARS. Any failings of intelligence or anything else
for that matter that happened by Sept. 2001 were well within
the time frame where the new Bush administration had not had
time to make changes that had ACTUALLY TAKEN REAL EFFECT. In
some cases now, over four years later, the Bush administration
has been unablt to actually reverse problems caused
by having a Democratic administration.
