UK bomb alerts
Two bomb alerts I know of in the last two days, one at Doncaster
station and the other at Roslin Chapel (I happened to find out about them since my girlfriend was involved in an event that was affected by both in succession). Were there a whole lot in other places round the UK? I'd expect the level of official paranoia to correlate with the number of brown bits Blair has licked out of America's arse, so this isn't surprising at the moment. ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/ for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |

UK bomb alerts
Anyone who leaves a bag unattended anywhere should be sparking off
some concern. At what point this constitutes what you would consider a "bomb alert" is debatable. On Sat, 29 Jul 2006 23:24:28 +0100, Jack Campin - bogus address wrote: Two bomb alerts I know of in the last two days, |

Anyone who leaves a bag unattended anywhere should be sparking off some concern. At what point this constitutes what you would consider a "bomb alert" is debatable. It constitutes a bomb alert when somebody gets a building evacuated. Closing a major tourist attraction and shutting down one of the busiest railway lines in the UK is a bit more than "some concern". ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/ for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |

True, but it's also fairly common, at least in the busier parts of the UK and Europe. Any bag left behind becomes a "suspect package" as is dealt with accordingly. Evacuation of a building or a station and suspension of transport services may be necessary. Welcome to the 21st century. -- Richard J. (to e-mail me, change 'ten' to 'net' in address) |

IMO, even if such measures prove to be "overreaction" 99% of the time, there is still that 1% when the "alert" proves warranted, and lives are saved by it. Terrorist or merely mentally ill (if there is a difference) there are a lot of violent people out there who think killing innocents to "make a statement" is warranted. |

Were there a whole lot in other places round the UK? Not enough to make the news... The vast majority don't. Fairly typical is one I watched a few years ago. A briefcase was standing in the middle of a car park outside the local Council Offices. The owner returned to pick it up while the RN bomb disposal expert was rolling his robot out of the van. The owner had put the briefcase down while opening his car and driven off without picking it up again. The owner of a piece of unattended baggage at Toulouse airport last year was rather less lucky and the sound of it being blown open was audible throughout the bits the public were still allowed into. I don't think it makes a any difference.
