The point was - if you bothered to read the rest of the thread -that a
"security guarantee" was a poor substitute for a more secure system
that you could use when travelling overseas.

My comments were not specifically aimed at you, merely an observation that
'**** happens' so be prepared rather than relying on security guarantees and
'more secure' systems (though you might as well carry a little blue blanket
and cry for mummy when financial institutions screw up). No offence was
meant.
:O)

I tend to avoid overseas ATMs (and internet cafes) for money
transactions.

That reminds me of the risk of internet banking from internet cafes.

That's certainly a real risk. I know someone whose use of an internet
cafe in Thailand to check his balances lead to a loss of $20k. Expats
tell me these scams are generally run by the friendly cafe staff, not
sinister internet hackers.

I've lived in Thailand on-and-off for 5 years and always use Thai
Farmer' Bank ATM's - never had a problem.

I think the risks are no greater in Thailand than in Australia - the
recent card-skimming case etc. Just be careful, wherever you are.

Fraud at internet cafes has nothing to do with ATMs or card-skimming.

I can't recall suggesting that it did - please read carefully and try
and keep up !!

Looks to me as though you suggested it.

SOME OTHER HELPFUL TIPS:
1/ You might also want to get two such cards by making a dummy second
card holder and carry them in separate containers, just in case you get
mugged or lose one.

On the two occasions that my wife had her purse stolen Mastercard and
Diners Club cancelled my card as well. She was the principal card
holder for Mastercad but I was the principal card holder for Diners.
We now carry different credit cards.

Additionally with the NAB system you have to rely
on the delivery of SMS which isn't 100% reliable, particularly

The SMS carriers offer no service agreement for delivery at all.
Imagine trusting a financial transaction to such a loose
arrangement!

SMS has never had end to end guarantees, even domestically.

Nope!! It charges exactly the same 'exchange' fee as is charged for any other transaction.

'exchange' fee varies from card to card. On top of that typically get
slung with transaction fees, as outlined at:
http://moneymanager.smh.com.au/artic...246581188.html

Saying that, the following card has is FREE of transaction fees
Worldwide!! Nice.

" PC Access Visa Card is free of transaction fees. You can use your PC
Access
Visa Card at all ATMs, EFTPOS outlets, and at all retail stores and
utilities
worldwide displaying the Visa logo."

As per

Don't rely on this. After my credit and debit cards disappearing in
Berlin it took me six months (by which time I was at home) to get the
mouth breathing monkeys at my bank's call centre to replace my Visa
card.

Clearly you're with the wrong bank. Which bank was it?

HSBC Jersey (I thought I was being clever opening an "offshore"
bank account while I was contracting in the UK). Don't believe the
advertising about them being "the world's local bank".

I've lost my credit and charge cards once. It took Amex 12 hours to
give me a replacement, and the slowest bank took 48 hours.

Being overseas and moving one country per week complicated matters,
as did the DHL flight out of the US with my emergency replacement
VISA card on it being grounded on Sepember 12th, 2001. But that
performance was still pathetic and it still angers me.

Cheers, Robert.
