GALA WRIGHT BROTHERS' CENTENNIAL
COMMEMORATIVE WORLD AIR SPEED RECORD FLIGHT
"AROUND THE WORLD OVER BOTH THE EARTH'S POLES"
From March 13-15, 2004 a Northwest Airlines will operate a specially
chartered Boeing 747-451 that will fly around the world over both the North
and South Poles in an attempt to break a world record!
This flight will attempt to beat the old record set on October 28-30,1977 by
about three hours. This will only be the fourth time in history that a
commercial jet aircraft will cross Antarctica.
A scheduled flight operated by Concorde Spirit Tours will depart the gate at
Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Florida at 12:00 Noon on Saturday,
March 13, 2003.
It will head for Rio Gallegos, Argentina; then continue over the South Pole
and approximately 4200 statute miles of Antarctica in daylight to Perth,
Australia
It then continues on to Beijing, China; then fly over the North Pole and
back to Fort Lauderdale, arriving back at the gate at approximately 3:28 PM
on Monday, March 15, 2004.
Bid price is for a Premium Coach Class seat with an empty adjacent seat for
extra room and in-flight comfort. Upgrade to a Business Class seat for $5000
per person.
General Thomas P. Stafford, USAF (Ret.), who was the APOLLO X and
APOLLO-SOYUZ mission commander, will be the flight's special host. General
Stafford holds the all-time world air speed record for circumnavigating the
Earth in a spacecraft--APOLLO X--at 24,791.4 miles per hour.
Total Flying Time: 45 Hours 23 Minutes
Ground Time: 4 Hours 45 Minutes (1 Hour 35 minutes x 3 refueling stops)
The plane will stop to refuel at Rio Gallegos, Argentina; Perth, Australia;
and Beijing, China. Allowing passengers 1 hour and 25 minutes to get off the
plane and stretch.
Total Taxiing time: 1 hour
Total Elapsed Time: 51 Hours; 08 Minutes from FLL back to FLL for an
attempted new world air speed record!
