Default using ATMs outside Australia - best bank?

Hello,

I'm leaving Australia shortly for a holiday in Brazil. How can I access
my money overseas?

Has anyone tried using the ATMs in another country to get their money
from an Australian bank account? What's the best bank for this kind of
thing?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The cheapest - they all offer the service!!!

Usually it's between $2.50 to $5 AUD per transaction.

I use a credit Union which has offsets relating to the size of my balance!

It's not quite as usurious as it sounds since they all offer the wholesale
interbank exchange rate (and all charge between 2% and 3% exchange fee!! The
Good Lord giveth - and the Good lord taketh away!)

They actually use one of the international ATM networks - Plus; Cirrus;
Maestro; Star - there's dozens and most banks belong to 10 or more!!
Check the fees!!

As far as I know the only reputable bank in the world to offer the service
free is Nationwide in the UK!!

Despite the costs; ATMs are definitely the way to go - Safe!!
Convenient!!

It's not the size of the balance, mate - it's how you use it :-)

Just spent three weeks in Sydney from the UK and all my Nationwide (visa
card and savings account) transactions were free, and the exchange rate was
around 2.38AUD/1GBPound. Excellent service.

If you read the fine print on the contract you made with the credit card
company (or participating bank), you will find a currency exchange
percentage written into the document.

And you use any ATM basically the same as you would at home.
Applicable fees will vary.

It would make more sense to ask this question in a group devoted to
travel in Brazil or South America, rather than groups about investment
and travel in Australia.

Firstly your card must have the Cirrus or Maestro affiliation.
Then go to the Visa and/or Mastercard site and make sure there are ATMs at
the locations you are travelling to. I am assuming you are going further
than the beaten track.
Also perhaps worth doing search for banks in Brazil to see which of them
offer Cirrus/Maestro.

I operated my ANZ savings account in the most obscure states of India
(Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland Look them up, they're behind Burma) through the
State Bank of India. The machines had only gone in in the last year and not
even the bank managers believed it could be done. I also carried a few Amex
travellers cheques because I wasn't sure there'd be ATMs in those cities.

That is not correct. There is an exchange fee built into the
conversion, but you are still better off than trying to change it
yourself, as it is done at a wholesale rate.
