Default Best location to stay in NY to see Attractions

Also I would ditch the car once you get to NYC, if you are flying out
of NYC. There is no need for a car.

Not only no need, it's an incredible hassle. You can get to the airport
by train at the end.

Now personally, I'd skip Disney and spend more time in NYC.

This is our first visit to NY and we want to see the normal touristy
stuff. If you know of any good budget accommodation in that location
will be helpful.

Last time we were in NYC we stayed at the Riverside Tower. Convenient
location on the upper east side. But really really tiny rooms.

I thought that was on the upper west side.

Corrected.

And if you are NYer, what are the sites that should be missed besides
Liberty?

Little Italy, the South Street Seaport, and Rockefeller Center are all
total tourist traps and not worth your time. Generally avoid
restaurants in those areas, and in Times Square and the Theater
District.

Don't go to La Marqueta in Spanish Harlem (which is featured in some
older guidebooks) - once a thriving Latin market, there's almost
nothing left there.

The Staten Island Ferry is worth taking for the views, but when you
get to the other side get on the return ferry immediately and don't
hang around on Staten Island, which has nothing of interest at all.

Disagree about Little Italy. While it is smaller than it was (Chinatown is
getting larger and encroaching), a few years back, I had the best marinara
sauce I'd ever had at a Little Italy restaurant.

The only complaint: there was a singer going through every tacky
stereotypical Italian song ever written (when the moon's in the sky like a
big Pizza Pie...and so forth), and then came to each table for a donation.
After he left my table, I turned to my friends and whispered (after handing
over a buck or two) " there's more where that came from if he promises not
to sing again!"

I always enjoy strolling around Chinatown, and have had some great meals
there...generally very inexpensive.

We've done the Staten Island Ferry in reverse...drove to Staten Island to
get better parking rates and took the Ferry to Manhattan.
