Hi group,

I am heading to Vienna next week and wonder what you did in the city
besides going to concert halls and taking pictures? Any nearby
city/town worth a go? Festivals? Any suggestion is welcomed. Thx!

How much time do you have? Budapest can be reached in two hours from
Vienna.

The small town of Eisenstadt, is a short ride from the Südbahnhof bus
station.

There is the Prater fairground, The UN headquarters, cruise on the
Danube, hang out at the Stadtpark, The Haus De Musik (where you can
shadow conduct the Vienna Philhamonic), Volksoper, numerous houses for
German theatre etc. If you like churches, St. Peter's near the
Cathedral, strongly recommended.

Tons of museums and art galleries. But I suppose that's in the taking
photos section. :-)

Get a boat trip down the Danube to Bratislava.
Up river is Dürnstein and one of Austria's major wine regions.

Visit the open-air "Naschmarkt" food market.

Wander along the Donauinsel, if the weather's nice.

There are dozens of bars - the most infamous region is probably the
"Bermuda Triangle". You can imagine why it got its name.

Swimming , squash, try the mineral baths in Oberlaa on the south edge of
the city (right at the very end of the tram line 67)

A day trip out to Neusiedlersee. It's normally shallow enough to be able to
walk right across the middle. I wouldn't recommend it though ;-)

have a look at
www.wien.info including
http://www.wien.info/article.asp?IDArticle=13214

imho there is enough "sightseeing" for a week, especially
if you should be just somehow interested in arts and history.
In addition, the Museum of Natural History has plenty of
very remarkable objects (the presentation does not match
the quality of many of them) and to me Wienna Zoo was
almost as interesting as nearby Schönbrunn castle .....
(looks like I have seen to many castles over the last
few years ...)

A train excursion could be a suggestion.
Either the narrow gauge Mariazellerbahn (Wien west-St.Pölten-Mariazell)
or the rack and pinion train Schneebergbahn (Wien SO-Puchberg-Schneeberg
http://www.schneebergbahn.at/
find out schedules on
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

I'd back up these recommendations as well, having done both.

Did the Scneebergbahn on a blazingly hot day, and it was deliciously
cool when I got to the top.
