Default Dontation Clothing for Kenya

Greetings rec.travel.africa,

I'm hoping you can help me. I'm leaving for Kenya on Wednesday (11/3). We
are flying into Nairobi and spending about a day and a half there, and then
to Malindi. I contacted a couple embroidery places in my local area and I
received about 4 boxes packed full (about 200 lbs.) of brand new baseball
caps, t-shirts, and golf shirts. They are over-runs.

My question is what would be worth taking? I heard from a fellow missionary
prior to getting all this stuff that the baseball caps would definitely be a
hit, but what about the golf shirts and the "April 2002 Biz Band Festival
Featuring the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band" t-shirts?

Any advice would be VERY helpful! Thanks in advance!!

Scott

Clothing in general would be very appreciated in most African
countries and they are not worried about the logo's or
what event it was manufactured for. The hardest thing will probably
be distribution I would advise contacting a church or local charity
organisation.

Actually, getting the clothing through Customs will probably be the
biggest problem...

Scott,
Who are you actually thinking of donating these clothes to? Is it to a
specific organisation or are you thinking of handing them out just to
anybody? Two hundred pounds worth sounds a heck of a large quantity!
As has been said, think about the Customs people and there will be a
lot of excess baggage to pay. You could take just a few caps and T
shirts if they are just for gifts. I know Malindi, it`s not a big town
and I can just picture all the young people going around in Nitty
Gritty Dirt band shirts!

Pat,

I know I cannot take it all. I believe there is a weight limit of 75 lbs so
I am going to take 1 duffle bag full in addition to my travel bag. I have
so much here that I thought I would take the nicest stuff first (there are
many nice short sleeve golf shirts).

The reason I am going is because I am part of a missions trip. My team is
going to be building desks for a local school and working on a concrete
floor in a school, and we are part of a larger missions organization based
in Malindi. As recommended, I will most likely let the church or the
missions organization be responsible for who gets the clothing because I am
aware that there is "communal hierarchies" that I wouldn't want to upset.

Thanks for everybody's suggestions. God bless,

Scott

Scott,
That`s great!
I wish you all the best in Malindi. If you haven`t been before you will
find you will receive a great welcome. I think you are doing a good
thing with the desks and the floor of the school. The missions
organisation will distribute the clothing wisely, I`m sure.
I wish you all the best when you get to Kenya and Malindi in
particular.

I've more than once seen the sort of T-shirts/tops I wore as a student (too
long ago to mention) on sale in Nairobi street stalls. And I've stopped
looking twice at the sort of white t-shirts with SALE written on them which
come from dummies in clothes shop windows here being worn by young men in
Kenya.

So I'd imagine that as long as you can cope with the logisics they'll be
welcome somewhere.
