Getting to know people in Japan

It looks like your main concern is the cost of accommodation.
Unfortunately, Japanese people are very reluctant to invite you even to
visit their homes, let alone stay. This is partly because their homes are
very small, and partly a tradition of privacy. If your budget is really
restricted, read up on gaijin houses.

I'll be going to Japan during spring 2004 and worry a lot about how I'm
going to figure stuff out, get around, find (cheap) places to stay etc.
I talked with someone here who had been to Japan for a month, though
staying with friends at (expensive!!!) hotels etc. and was suggested
that I try to get to know people in Japan through the Internet who I
could hook up when I get there.

Damn 40k yen is currently swapping out for about 34 bucks. I think you
got some cojones trying to navigate Japan with that kind of
restriction. I can tell you right up front you won't always be able to
find a place to stay on that price.

Considering that, you better do as I've never done before, book
everything in advance.
