Default Celebrity wine auctions

Has anyone ever attended one of the Celebrity wine auctions?
If so what was your take on the auction.
I have read a few threads on cruise critic lately about them and the
wine auctions sound just as bad as the art auctions on other lines.
Do any other lines have wine auctions?

I think these wine auctions are a mistake that Celebrity will regret.
I have also heard negative remarks about the auctions, auctioneers and
the product--when it was FINALLY delivered. I wouldn't buy wine that
didn't have a taste test!

Actually Silversea had a wine auction on my recent voyage (Cloud 28Dec05)
It was a silent auction with the winning bid usually being the reserve.
Those who bought were likely to be buying for a reserve wine to drink at
dinner during the cruise, though some very good QPR was available on some
very fine wine.

I was just wondering about the Celebrity auctions. One person stated
that there was no reserve mentioned on the auction, and the auctioneer
opened bidding at $100 this woman was the only bidder but they refused
to sell it to her.
If I remeber correctly they told her to see them after the auction to
perhaps make a deal.

That is one thing that I did not like on our Infinity cruise..the many
flyers about the wine and cigar auction..It's bad enough getting all of them
about art auctions (on all the cruise lines) but do we need to be bombarded
about wine and cigar auctions now? Also the Infinity had their *Inch of
Gold* table set out as the other lines do...I appreciated the few
announcements but one way or another those bean counters will get to you!
Lots of flyers in the cabin vs. announcements. Still was very impressed with
the Infinity and will be giving the Mercury a chance to strut their stuff in
April!
