LA tips pls. (accomodation, area)
Hi all,
my wife and I will be visiting Los Angeles mid May. We are trying to figure out where to stay for three nights. We are looking for a hotel priced around 100-150 in an area, where one could walk around a bit without getting mugged right away. I would also like to be able to have dinner without driving there first. I need to be able to park my car, get there from LAX without complicated directions etc. We were thinking about LongBeach downtown... Any other suggestions? (things we want to do in LA include Universal studios, but we can drive there and we'll have a car) |

Best Western on Ocean should fit your budget and is within walking distance of Third Street Promonade and the beach. |

I would also like to be able to have dinner without driving there first. Plenty of restaurants between LAX an Santa Monica. You won't be going anywhere in LA where you are likely to get mugged. I need to be able to park my car, get there from LAX without complicated directions etc. The problem with getting around in LA is inconsistent signs on the freeways, e.g. some signs will identify it as the "5" others as the "Santa Ana Freeway," and instead of giving directions, like 134 North, you'll have to find 134 towards Ventura. Some freeways which are identified as running north and south actually run east and west for stretches. We were thinking about LongBeach downtown... Any other suggestions? Yeah. Don't go to Long Beach. Long Beach isn't LA, nor is it particularly close. To get to LA from Long Beach, you'll have to drive on the 405, which has some of the worst traffic in the nation. (things we want to do in LA include Universal studios, Why? There are so many better things to do. but we can drive there and we'll have a car) |

Stay the hell away from California unless you like fruits and nuts. It will
be the worst trip in your life. They kill people there as if they are unborn baby. In fact especially if you are. Go to Florida instead. People there are dumber than on the west coast. (CAN'T PUNCH A BALLOT WITHOUT A TUTOR). But they are older than dirt and you could most likly beat them up. "Bernhard Mayer" wrote in message om... You won't be going anywhere in LA where you are likely to get mugged. I need to be able to park my car, get there from LAX without complicated directions etc. The problem with getting around in LA is inconsistent signs on the freeways, e.g. some signs will identify it as the "5" others as the "Santa Ana Freeway," Typically, if it's a "named" freeway, there's also the number nearby. The difficulty would be that the same numbered freeway will have different names for different segments, and some freeway names will "change" numbers. For example, I-10 is the Santa Monica freeway west of downtown, but the San Bernardino freeway east of downtown. The Hollywood freeway can refer to the portion of the (U.S.)101 north of downtown, but also that part of the (CA)170 that splits off to the north from the 101, while the 101 beyond the 170 split becomes the Ventura freeway. and instead of giving directions, like 134 North, you'll have to find 134 towards Ventura. Again, usually the sign will have both a direction and a "destination," but finding the right direction may take some searching of the sign. It's helpful if you are not familiar with the drive to study a map ahead of time and to have a dependable navigator in the passenger seat to tell you which lane you've got to get into well BEFORE the roadway actually splits. The navigator is important because even though the road on the map appears to require an exit to the left, the ramp you need to get on to get to that road might be to the right. The extra set of eyes to scan the signs while the driver keeps his/her eyes on the road and mirrors could be helpful. Some freeways which are identified as running north and south actually run east and west for stretches. Yes, but that's true all over. We were thinking about LongBeach downtown... Any other suggestions? Yeah. Don't go to Long Beach. Long Beach isn't LA, nor is it particularly close. To get to LA from Long Beach, you'll have to drive on the 405, which has some of the worst traffic in the nation. I would not necessarily NOT stay in downtown Long Beach, but it would not be my first choice. Personally, I'd prefer "downtown" (Old Town) Pasadena. Lots of foot traffic, lots of choices for food, lots of shops, and cleaner [and, imho, safer] than many of your alternatives. Long Beach would probably be cheaper, however. (things we want to do in LA include Universal studios, As I always like to note, you can get to Universal Studios via the subway. From Pasadena, you can take the gold line to Union Station, then walk over to the red line tracks for the trip to Universal Studios. It's not as quick as driving [mainly because the gold line segment through South Pasadena slows to a crawl, but also because it's not as direct, distance-wise], but it is pretty stress-free. TK |

All in all, rec.travel.usa-canada is fairly low on the idiot quotient, but you're proof that some do exist on this newsgroup. |
