Yes, you call the airline and you will have to tell them the funeral
home information. I don't remember exactly what but you will have to
verify the information.

It depends on the airline, the time, etc. I think it was half of a last
minute reservation.

Depends on where you
are going and with which airline. I had to ask this same question of
British Airways a few months ago for a bereavement flight back to UK.
They said the fare would be the regular fare, no discounts, and that I
would be guaranteed a seat. The only stipulation they required was a
copy of the death certificate

The last two times I have flown home on a bereavement fare, it was
expensive - a flight I normally pay $175-250 for was over $800 ... which is
one half of the one-day fare. They wanted my relationship to the deceased
and, the last time, the confirmation of death by the funeral home. I made
my reservations before my sister had the time to call the funeral home, so
that added to the hassle. The reservation agents are unfailingly polite but
the regulations are really strict because, unbelievably, people abuse the
system quite often.

So, let me get this straight. They are not giving you any discounts. Why
then do they need a death certificate?

You are guaranteed a seat anyway if you buy a regular ticket, no?

Sorry to hear of your loss. You may want to check on-line airfare sources as
well. Sometimes the on-line fares are better than the breavement fares. I
believe the bereavement fares are approximately the same as full coach 14-day
advance purchase fares, except that they waive the advance purchase
requirements.

everyone else covered this adequately. i wanted to add that when my
grandfather died a few years back, i booked a flight from DCA -- MIA
using
the bereavement leave policy. at the time, my cousin was pretty high up in
the pricing department at a major carrier. he called me on the phone, and
said he was looking at my reservation. he commented that he would change
my
reservation from ``bereavement leave'' to ``death emergency''. i don't
recall what the original price was or even what the bereavement price was,
but the death emergency cost me $75. this was in 1994, so YMMV, but maybe
drop the ``death emergency'' keyword when making your reservation.

You won't necessarily get a lower price. The only way to tell though is
to call the airlines who fly the route you expect to take and ask, then
compare those airlines' berevement fares to other sources such as the
popular travel web sites like expedia, travelocity, and orbitz.
