Default Can't use a ticket

A coworker bought a ticket for his wife MSP to MIA, to help their child
pack for the return from college in May. Due to work issues, they have
decided mom cannot go, so he bought another ticket for himself instead.
He accepts that he will have to consider the wife's ticket a loss.
Is there any way to recover some of the value of the ticket?

What did the airline say when he called them and asked?

Refund rules vary from fully refundable to fully forget it, with a
frequent middle ground being that if you cancel before the day of
travel, you can apply the value to a future ticket less a change fee
of $100 or so. But the only way to know what rules apply to a
particular ticket is to know the airline and the exact fare basis code
to look the rules up, and the easiest way to do that is to call and
ask.

It really depends on the price he paid for the ticket. If he cancels before
the scheduled first flight, he can get a credit, usually good for up to a
year. He'll have to pay a change fee (usually $100 - $150 these days), plus
any additional airfare on the new ticket, but he can use the credit for
another trip.
