what happened to fares to US?

Looked at some BNE-LAX for June time frame ... flamen $3k AUD ... whats
happened to these routes? Is this the cheapest you can get?

Blame Qantas.
Until Qantas gives up it's strangehold on the trans-Pacific route,
fares will remain expensive!

Hopefully one of the Aussie regulars here will come up with url's for
discount websites.

We've got the usual Travelocity-owned consolidator (here, it's branded as
"Zuji" - www.zuji.com.au) plus a couple of other locals, www.travel.com.au
and www.flightcentre.com.au

I just checked Zuji and it gives (as one example from many) Korean Airlines
BNE-LAX via Seoul 1Jun-15Jun for AUD1845 including taxes

return for $2050pp including taxes thats flying Qantas

www.kayak.com is showing return flights from about US$1600
(AirNZ). They even have Qantas return flights from about
US$1700, which is about AU$2125.

There are many options available - through Asia. Airlines include China
Air - Eva Air - Korean Air - Japan Air - China Southern - Malaysia (via
Stockholm) - Thai - Asiana - Malaysia/NW joint (through KUL and Narita or
Taipei).

The downside is that all are longer flights than the direct flights and all
are via at least one Asian port.

Some little publicised direct options are - Pacific Air - Air Tahiti Nui -
Continental (from Cairns, through Guam) - Hawaiian (sp?) Air. Air NZ and Air
Canada sometimes run specials.
