One wonders what the second most secure cities would have been in an American study or a Chinese study. Detroit? Lhasa? How on earth do they work these thinngs out? Who is silly enough to pay for them? Where do I apply for my research grant? The list was compiled by Mercer Human Resources Consulting. They employ a number of indexes and matrices to arrive at their conclusions. I certainly can't quibble with them. The results are used to guide workers and companies when considering moves/assignments/investments. More interesting is their Top 10 "Quality of Living" cities: 1) Zurich 2) Vienna 3) Geneva 4) Vancouver 5) Auckland 6) Dusseldorf 7) Munich 8) Frankfurt 9) Bern 10) Sydney Keep in mind this QOL index is geared toward business solutions, not retirement comfort or nightclubbing. I generally agree with the results. Large businesses need access to an educated workforce, a stable government, pleasant surroundings and ease of commerce. These 10 cities are all great choices. I live closest to Vancouver (it's my "city" more than Seattle is) and I would gladly relocate their if asked. Even Dusseldorf or Munich would be OK, but I certainly prefer Vienna. - TR Wien for the Win! |

In any survey of that type, I find it interesting to remove both the cities from tiny countries (Luxembourg, Monaco etc) and all but the top one from each nation. My reason for the latter being that the quality of life and security tends to be similar in major cities across most nations. That would give this result for best quality of life: 1 Zurich Switzerland 2 Vienna Austria 3 Vancouver Canada 4 Auckland New Zealand 5 Dusseldorf Germany 6 Sydney Australia 7 Copenhagen Denmark 8 Amsterdam Netherlands 9 Brussels Belgium 10 Stockholm Sweden Cheers, Alan, Australia -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/alan_s/ http://loraltravel.blogspot.com Latest: Indira Gandhi Airport, Delhi |

Singapore isn't very safe if you are addicted to chewing gum, or wish to scribble graffiti on walls. It also isn't very safe for migrant workers, see http://hrw.org/doc/?t=asia&c=singap Regards David Bennetts |
