Round the world itinary?
Hiya, Im considering doing the following trip. London - overland China,
(via Russia), fly Thailand, fly Australia, NZ, and back to London. Not sure about homewards route, perhaps America? Would definatly like to fit in cook islands, Fiji, or some other tropical place if possible. The problem is I want to goto South Africa to do some sararis etc. Im not sure if I can fit it in on my return route, as round the world tickets with star alliance and one world, dont let u go back on yourself, (and I would have to fly pass uk, if comming from nz). I could do South Africa on outward route, but really want to do journey from London - Russia/china overland. Any suggestions please? I am a low-cost student backpacker, so can only afford really cheap flights etc. Thanks Phil :-) |

However, in Star, ground segments count in the total distance. So the London-China would count towards the total distance travelled. And most RTW packages do require that you end your journey in the same country (or city depending on package) that you started from. With Star, you could fly Air NZ from NZ to Fiji, then to Los Angeles. There, you'd have to endure domestic USA flights to New York and Atlanta and fly to South Africa from there. Airlines still have their own round the world packages which may include airlines that are not part of the same alliance. So you'd need to find a package that include South African Airways to be able to include the hop from USA to Africa and perhaps Africa back to London. There are also non-RTW packages which may be of use to you, especially since you're doing such a long hop by land (London to China). You will really need to do some research with a good travel agent on this one. |

Star allows you to do anything you want to do for the most part, and that does indeed include backtracking *and* going further than round the world (providing you don't transit your country of origin.) You just have to keep within certain restrictions like mileage totals, city transfers, city stopovers, IATA area 2 to 3 restrictions, max of 28 segments and oceanic crossing limits as well as a few other minor restrictions. You could do London-Frankfurt-Jo'Burg-Frankfurt-Moscow-Beijing -Seoul-Bangkok-Sydney-Auckland-Rarotonga-LAX-London quite legally on a Star RTW, although it's over 36,000 mls so you're in the top level of the fares on offer. By the same token, you still have 2,000 miles to play with so there are plenty of other options for you still to play with. (IE - From Auckland, take your pick of Samoa, Fiji, Raro, Papeete & Honolulu for example). Another option that I think is better for you is the "World Journey" RTW. This is offered by KLM, Sth African, Malaysia, Emirates, Kenya Airways, Northwest, Alaska, Continental, Air Pacific and a couple of other minor ones like Jet (India) etc. Because of the carriers concerned, you can really whack a heap of miles off what the Star one would be and get yourself a decent lower RTW fare, yet still get everything in you want to do. You could do: London-Nairobi (still good safari options) on Kenya Airways Nairobi-Dubai-Moscow on Emirates Your overland to Beijing Beijing-Kuala Lumpur-Thailand (not just BKK - other options) on Malaysia Thailand-KUL-Australia on Malaysia Sydney-Melbourne or Brisbane to Auckland on Malaysia or Emirates Auckland or Christchurch to Fiji on Air Pacific, then any South Pac island Fiji-LAX on Air Pacific LAX back to London any which way you want, KLM, Continental, Northwest via any of their ports. Again, plenty of options with this RTW. I'm presuming your overland is something like the Trans-Siberian or similar, so it's always going to hurt you as ground or surface segments count towards the mileage of the RTW. If you plan well, and choose the right RTW, you can do all you want to do at a reasonable cost. Sounds like an excellent trip! Good Luck. Cheers. |
