Default All US planes to be searched

BBC reports that the USA government has ordered ALL commercial planes in the
USA to be searched within the next 24 hours, Supposedly, they found a box of
boxcutters hidden in 2 planes, at least one of which was a Southwest airlines.
There was a note expalining that this was a proof that US security was weak.

The life expectancy of any budding terrorists who arm themselves with
boxcutters and stand up on a US airline announcing they are hijacking it
would be rather short

I don't get your point. The fact that they themselves died didn't seem to
be much of a deterent.

The boxcutter ploy worked on 9/11 due to the element of surprise. My point
was that anyone stupid enough to try it now would probably experience a
nasty and painful demise as passengers certainly would not stay quietly in
their seats given what could potentially happen. I certainly as a passenger
would take my chances against the boxcutters.

All this aside, the fact that any potential weapon was smuggled onboard an
aircraft is certainly a cause for concern.

Chances are that these were smuggled by airport/airline/TSA workers and not by passengers.

Remember that the survival; of the current totalitarian government resides a
lot on its ability to keep US citizens scared of terrorism, so every now and
then, it is normal to expect such scare stories.

In the real world where security is not a political ploy, such an incident
would not have made the news and airlines would have quietly been asked to be
on the lookout for such items.

Lets face it, at least once a day, you would expect the airline to clean the
cabin fully and would therefore find such items. This request to make such a
search within 24 hours is just a PR exercise by the government to show its
citizens that it is taking charge of the situation.

On 9/11 the pilots allowed the hijackers to take over the aircraft
because the hijackers slashed some of the crew and/or passengers.
Pilots will no longer open the cockpit door, regardless of how much
blood is spilled. Passengers & crew know this and will fight the
hijackers any way they can. Hijackers might injure and/or kill some
of the P&C but they will never take enter the cockpit again. So we
will not see a repeat of 9/11, regardless of what our government
tells us. And in case you think this is conjecture on my part, I was
told by a Delta pilot soon after 9/11 that if weapons are brandished
on his aircraft, he will immediately head for the nearest airport and
tell the passengers via the intercom that they better kill the arabs, as
the passengers are on their own.

Of course the pilot can probably use some 'exotic' maneuvers like even a
few barrel rolls to shake up the hijackers and give the pax the edge in
recovering control of the pax cabin.

And I don't get your point. You seem to be arguing against the possibility
that some people would hijack the plane with box-cutters, crash it into the
ground, and then get beaten up by other passengers.

I don't think you'll find many takers on that debate.

You've obviously not watched enough James Bond movies. You kidnap the pilots
before they reach the airport, put on their clothes etc, and then board the
aircraft, enter cockpit, lock the door. Then none of the passengers or FAs can
barge in and prevent the terrorists from crashing the plane into a building,
bridge, nukular reactor (USA version of a nuclear reactor) or other structure.

Those protected cockpits work both ways. Ask yourself: are there sufficient
procedures at airports to ensure that the pilots who board an aircraft are
really the human beings supposed to board that aircraft? Once in uniform,
anyone looks like a pilot.

There's a bit of interaction between the pilots and cabin crew before the
flight; the impostors would have to be good. Also, if the name on the roster
was an acquaintance of a crew member, they'd notice the discrepancy.
