Toronto to Vancouver on TransCanada Highway in October

Hello,

Will be driving (first time) from Toronto to Vancouver (one way only)
across the TransCanada highway. This will be in early October, 2004
and am wondering if it would be advisable to pre-book motel\hotels
along the way?

My preference would be to drive as little or as much as you want
during a day and just grab a motel wherever you decide to stop, but am
not sure how available motel or hotels would be if you happen to be
somewhere between decent size population centres. (especially in early
October)

Has anyone done this drive enough times, maybe even at this time of
the year (early October) to offer an opinion based on their own
experiences?

If anyone would like to suggest names of reasonably priced lodging
(B&B's or motels) that they liked along the way, this would be most
appreciated.

I plan on taking a liesurely 7 to 10 days to do the trip in. (one way
only)

Also, since this is late in the season, am I likely to find many
attractions, or lodging "closed up for the season"?
