Best cheap accomodation in NYC?
Having never booked accomodation in NYC are there any good hostels that are
worth looking at in NY? I'm not after anywhere fancy to stay, just somewhere that is reasonably neat and is within walking distance of the subway so that I can get around reasonably easily. It can even be out on Long Island as long as it's near the LIRR so I can get into the centre of the city in a straightforward manner. If there are any good B&B's in the suburbs then that would suit me as well. |

It's been a while since I've been there, but it was perfectly fine and near a subway. There are also plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. I believe it's at 108th St. and Amsterdam Avenue, but in any case, it's the only HI hostel in Manhattan so it shouldn't be hard to find. Barbara |

If there are any good B&B's in the suburbs then that would suit me as well. Here is a recent _Chicago Tribune_ article about affordable Manhattan hotel rooms: http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel...chi-travel-hed or: http://tinyurl.com/tnwn "Between the seedy flophouses and the pricey penthouses, there is a middle ground, albeit a small one, beyond the chain affiliates. Middle ground? I'm talking about a nice, quiet room in a non-threatening neighborhood, close to good subway connections and the major Manhattan attractions, that would go for $150 or less on a busy weekend night, tax included, bookable over the Internet, with fresh linens, comfortable furnishings, good lighting, a clean private bathroom, pleasant lobby, fast elevator, basic services and a courteous staff. And it wouldn't hurt if the place had more elbow room than the typical, and legendarily compact, New York hotel room, and a bit of charm besides. You can stop laughing. During nine days in late-September, I went looking for that room. I'll tell you right now that I didn't find it. But after inspecting rooms in 31 hotels and actually spending the night in six more, I did locate a few that were surprisingly nice for the money, some that weren't bad and some that met a simple majority of the criteria. At the very least they're nothing like that dump where I spent my first two nights. I've settled on telling you about 14 of them—good points and bad—plus eight alternates. You can assume that each of these places has the in-room basics of telephone, cable TV and air conditioning; and the hotel basics of a 24-hour front desk, well-lighted hallways and an elevator, unless otherwise stated." / |

[snip] Actually, it's at Amsterdam and 104 St. :-) Yes, there's a subway stop at Broadway and 103 St., with exits between 103 and 104 Sts., so it's essentially a block from the subway. Michael If you would like to send a private email to me, please take out the TRASH, so to speak. Please do not email me something which you also posted. |
