Spring break spans several weeks, from mid march to early april.
Avoid florida or avoid the spring time if you need a calm holiday.

The timing of pring break varies form one school to another. The college
where I teach has spring break during March 15-19 this year. I think
schools fall in the range of first week of March through first week of
April.

and which places are to avoid if I need a calm holiday?

Panama City Beach and Daytona Beach come to my mind first. Fort
Lauderdale was once a major spring break town, but the city has made a
vigorous effort to shed that image during the past 10-15 years. Many or
most of the student-oriented businesses have closed, and new businesses
are geared more towards an upscale and family market. I remember one
hotel on the beach that used to have wet T-shirt contests by the pool in
front; it's now a hole in the ground, the future site of a upscale hotel
or condominium complex.

In another newsgroup someone was kind enough to post this link. It lists
Spring Break dates for most of the colleges.

The most popular spring break destination is no longer Fort Lauderdale
or South Beach in Miami but Cancun and some Caribbean islands.
