Very few people volunteers. Actually mostly companies who are doing
this as a form of advertising. From: "Xavier" But I saw roads perfectly clean, so someone does take care of them. He's saying that companies do the cleaning because they get their names on the 'Adopt-a-highway' signs, which is good advertising and also generates good-will. Actually in some states (including mine) the people who adopt the highway do not do the actual cleaning anymore due to liability concerns. Instead they pay the state for the cleaning costs. |

I think the vast majority of highways in the U.S. are cleaned by paid contractors hired by the highway department. "Adopt-a-highway" programs give companies & organizations a way of doing some volunteer work while getting some favorable publicity for their group. But I doubt if they cover more than a tiny percentage of U.S. highways. "Xavier" wrote in message ... That not some but hundreds or thousands of people (I saw lots and lots of signs) volunteer to keep roads clean. Very few people volunteers. In my state those someone are people who have violated traffic laws and do this as a way to avoid harsher penalties. I think this way of thinking is genuinely American. In Europe everybody would say that it's the government's job. That's why we pay taxes. In the US taxes is a dirty word. Nobody likes to pay taxes but (I think) we Europeans couldn't even imagine to adopt a highway. We would expect the Government to keep the roads clean. ************* DAVE HATUNEN ) ************* * Tucson Arizona, out where the cacti grow * * My typos & mispellings are intentional copyright traps * |

I am a member of a cycling club that has adopted a local highway. Well, about 3 miles of it. A group of members gets together once a month to "police" the right-of-way. The county allows us to use their orange vests and pick-up sticks. The club buys lunch for the group. [Rog'] |
