my wife and i are planning to visit namibia in july/august 2006.
at present we are checking the brochures/catalogues of the operators that offer 'non-expedition' trips to namibia. we have never been there, would like to do a 17-20 days' organised tour, including places like Windhoek Okahandja/Omaruru Etosha National Park Damaraland Swakopmund Namib Naukluft Park Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon Sossusvlei Luederitz Fishriver Canyon Kalahari seems to be the standard route. any local operators that offer these tours - in small groups, or even for 2 people? what about doing the tour on our own - rent a car, have the hotels pre-booked by operator? is it safe to be on your own?or would you miss too much if you didn't have a local guide? thanks for any helpwolfgang ex VIE, LOWW |

The major advantage of Southern Africa over East Africa is the ease of self-drive. If you have never done a safari perhaps you could hire a local guide at Etosha. However, it looks like a lot to do in 17 days. We did the trip in 2000 and have a few photos and a brief trip report on these web pages: http://www.wildworldweb.co.uk/holidays/namibia.htm http://www.wildworldweb.co.uk/holida...bia/report.htm I think our regular contributor Liz has done an organised trip more recently. http://www.v-liz.com/namibia/diary.htm Good luck -- John Macdonald |

The gravel roads are very good maintained but a 4x4 is "necessary" in order to prevent frequent flat tires. For Etosha NP and Sesriem campsite you have to make reservations!! (not really necessary for hotel accommodations). Advice: let the car rental organize this (no problem for them). We did a tour -self organized- in 2001 (see lower our mentioned site under "Itineraries") It's a great country but if you like to see all places within 20 days as you mentioned, it quite short. I agree. I think most people don't realise how big a country it really is. I certainly didn't before I went. I'd say four weeks was a minimum to reasonably cover all the areas Wolfgang mentioned - otherwise you'll just be rushing about constantly from place to place. Maybe OK if you're not interested in taking photos, but do you really want to be drive, drive, driving all the time? You don't want to be driving the gravel roads in the dark: too much danger of animals suddenly jumping out at you, e.g. kudus. If you're limited to 20 days, then skip either Etosha or the last three on your list. Or decide on your own priotities (e.g. if you skip Etosha you'll lost out on wildlife). Went with a group of photography students in 2001. Used Chameleon Safaris.
They can accommodate just about anything and were wonderful. Check: http://www.chameleonsafaris.com/the_company.htm My images can be found at: http://www.sunyocc.edu/~lewism/namibia/index.html "wolfgang k." wrote: my wife and i are planning to visit namibia in july/august 2006. at present we are checking the brochures/catalogues of the operators that offer 'non-expedition' trips to namibia. we have never been there, would like to do a 17-20 days' organised tour, including places like Windhoek Okahandja/Omaruru Etosha National Park Damaraland Swakopmund Namib Naukluft Park Sossusvlei & Sesriem Canyon Sossusvlei Luederitz Fishriver Canyon Kalahari seems to be the standard route. any local operators that offer these tours - in small groups, or even for 2 people? what about doing the tour on our own - rent a car, have the hotels pre-booked by operator? is it safe to be on your own?or would you miss too much if you didn't have a local guide? thanks for any helpwolfgang ex VIE, LOWW |
