Default Lake Annecy

For some reason lake Annecy and the region are not frequently
mentioned on this group. I have a few questions, may be somebody can
help.

1. Is it a good destination for regular senior tourists, in their
60s-70s, or this place is mostly for bikers, yachtsmans, etc ?

2. Is town of Annecy (la ville Annecy) navigatable by a small
rowboat ? How much time would it take to exlore it from a boat - I
mean, do I have to allocate more than one day for it ?

3. Is drive across Alps from Geneva to Annecy, and from there to
Turin, Italy, will be an easy one in May ?

well. I have been in Annecy many times. It is a very nice old town on a
beautiful lake. but the like is big.. You will have to row a lot..

the town is small and the historical centre is even smaller.
the castle is on a a steep rock though..

you can take a hotel in the new town and easily walk to the old town centre.

there is also a small village called Annecy la vielle.. but that will only
confuse you

there are many boats that make a tour of the lake.
( I do not know when they start. I mean what time of the year.)

You can easily drive from Annecy to Torino via the Mont Blanc Tunnel. Again.
it is an easy drive.
There should not be problems in may. I was there last year in Febrary. there
was snow and a temperature of minus 14.. but as soon as you get out of the
tunnel everything is sunny and warm again.

do not forget the town of Aosta ( the second town in Italy for Roman
monuments after Rome ) the ancient name was
Augusta Pretoria..

around Aosta there are about 200 castles.. some of them are a must.

food in Annecy is very good and reasonably priced.
I stayed in Novotel.. in the town centre with a parking lot underground.
I think the price was 70 or 100 Eur for a double room.

Annecy is a beautiful spot. You will find rowing in the rapids a bit
tricky (the lake empties through the village in a fairly shallow and
fast flowing stream and though there are long rows of boats on the lake
edge (you have seen those pictured, I gather, it is not a real scenic
row, it is a better walk. the old town is definitely a walking tour type
of place.

In may all the major alpine passes are opened. Going from Geneva to
Italy using the motorways is fast and easy. Roads are not always so
easy, but can be much more scenic.

From Annecy, if you have some time, you can reach the italian border
through the Aravis chain : Thones, Manigod, La Clusaz, Aravis pass (Mont
Blanc view), Megeve (closer Mont Blanc view), Saint-Gervais, Chamonix
(Nice alpine town, Aiguille du Midi cable car, mer de glace small
train). If you don't catch the motorway in Chamonix, you can reach Italy
passing by Martigny (Switzerland) and the Great St Bernard Pass.

You can eat raclette and drink abimes (savoy), fendant or johanisbeere
swiss wine.

Thanks JuanElorza. Due to time constrains and better ideas suggested
on this thread and elsewhere, I decided to skip lake Anecy
altogether The itinerary, as I am planning it now, will be:

Interlaken / Berner Oberland - Bern - Murten / Avenches - route around
lake Gruyeres - Montreux / Chateau de Chillon (not sure if Lausanne is
worth a day's visit) - Martigny - St. Bernard Pass - Aosta - Pont-St-
Martin - Turin etc

A nice ancient typical town of Savoie on the lake Leman side is Yvoire.
Boat services from Nyon on the swiss side in summer.
