We were out early and driving around in very heavy rain, some roads became impassable with water too deep to drive through and police cars turning us back. We went into Walmart and I struggled to hold the car door in the wind. We were soaked just getting into the store. We went to another store and bought some food and returned to this apartment early afternoon and I never ventured out again. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. |

What a boorish remark! I am in Washington now. Off sightseeing in a short while. FWIW I was wearing icebreaker leggings under my jeans. I won't need them today. Don't wear them skating. I am in Atlantic City now and it is swimming time. Some roads were blocked it is so wet. Check out the snack bar at Walmart! Yes, I did see it. Have a nice day! |

It's all very exciting for me:-) Does anyone know New York - or Washington? I am hoping to try some American veggie food so any recommendations as to where I might eat will be gratefully received. I am taking my laptop so you can all expect to hear from me on my travels. Regards Mrs B Like Jerry, I'm pretty far removed from NYC. Yes, the street dogs are wonderful, but you were asking about vegs. I can suggest that you try your query on rec.travel.usa-canada. It's a fairly sleepy group, but people wake up when there are questions about NY, especially restaurant questions. My guess is that you'll find the most vegetarian places in trendy areas like East Village and SoHo, but I'm sure they're scattered all over the city. Food in the city is good, and it doesn't have to be expensive to be good. Restaurants hang their menus outside, so there's no reason to embarrass anyone with shock at your bill. I know NYC has a reputation for surliness, but it's not true. Pull out a tourist map and look confused on any corner and you'll be sure to draw a crowd. Just don't expect agreement on directions. NY is a beutiful city for the most part, and quite safe by US standards. I hope the weather cooperates next week, as this winter has been very snowy there. Enjoy your visit, Keith Thank you Keith. I have added in rec.travel.usa-canada in case anyone has anything of note to add. I must say, I was concerned to read of the high crime rate in Atlantic City. As for the weather, I am taking my thermal underwear and windproof/waterproof coat. Not the height of fashion but extremely practical. Regards Mrs B- If you are looking for food related answers, you may want to try chowhound.com. They have a very active NYC board. I agree, for food related stuff, its hard to beat chowhound.com but those who think Atlantic City is a high crime area are living in the past. I live near AC. It is no worse than any other city where if you stay in the busy areas, do not deal in drugs, practice common sense behavior, you'll be fine. You are quite right of course. I am home, safe and well and off again tomorrow, this time to a small resort here in the UK. Thank you dear for your post. |
