Default Walkie Talkies on ships

We are a family of four (all adults), and will be cruising on RCL's Mariner
of the Seas in a couple of weeks. Because it's not practical to use cell
phones while at sea, we thought we would try to buy some walkie talkies to
stay in touch with one another as we go about our separate activities on
board. Has anyone had experience using these kind of devices on a ship like
the Mariner of the Seas? Any recommendations on specific models and prices?

Don't bother, all you will do is annoy the other passengers with those
squawk boxes.

they well, but be careful not to annoy everyone.

They work great on shore, though. We have used them on every cruise so far.
Princess rents them out.

On shore they are only legal for use in the United States and Canada.
In Mexico only the FRS radios are legal, not the combined FRS/GMRS
radios.

We used three with somewhat limited success. They don't transmit through
all that structure very well. Having said that I will take them again.
Keep in mind they are just as annoying as cell phones, so use them with
others in mind.
As far as brands, I like Motorola, and Uniden. Also, keep in mind
walkie-talkies, the FRS and GMRS radios are not legal everywhere.

Are the radios illegal, or use of them. Mine are combination radios, but
I only use the FRS frequencies.

The dual mode equipment is not approved by the Mexican Government.

Wayne,
You're fine until you run into an officious
police officer or other official who wants to make
his quota. Use any radio equipment at your risk.
It can be expensive, running from
confiscation of the equipment to a significant
contribution to the local Police Fund (FINE).
Cheers,
John in LALALand (On the Left Coast)

If you get caught there could be consequences. And you are in a foreign
country under their laws. It could be a big hassle. Besides would you
want to interfere with a public safety function in another country? For
example the FRS frequencies are used by the fire department in Great
Britain.
