Default Walkie Talkies

Hi Gang,
We have cruised several times and have noticed people with walkie
talkies. Is this something which is given to parents who perhaps have
children in the children's area, or is this an item available to anyone
wishing to keep in touch with friends or family while on the ship? My
question in particular will be for Carnival when we go with our kids and
grandchildren this fall.

Thanks,
Ray Bensch

Anyone can get them at Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, etc.
Start at about $49.00 a pair, more for greater range
and clarity.

The range is nowhere near what they advertise on the package especially on
cruise ships with all the steel. You're sometimes lucky to be able to talk
to the other unit 2 or 3 decks below & if separated by the length of the
ship it gets worse. They can be handy at times but over all there not worth
the effort.

Ray,

For your information, there was already quite a lengthy discussion on this
newsgroup on June 23,2006 called communication. This talks about this very
subject, and how many feel that walkie-talkies will or won't work. This may
be good reference for you.

My family has carried FRS (Family Radio Service) handheld radios for a
decade or more - in the mountains, desert, Mexico, amusement parks,
zoos, hiking, etc. etc. We even use them when driving in a caravan. I
give them to employees for trade shows. They're wonderful! On our first
cruise in a long while (last Feb), we took a pair. That enabled my wife
and I to comfortably go our own way ashore, linking up when we chose...

FRS radios are often advertised as loss-leaders for $10-20 per pair, and
sometimes free after rebate. We have about 3-4 pair laying around and
they all work together on the same frequencies. Some are more complex
than others, but all work for up to a mile or so depending on the
environment.

We bought a pair of Motorola walkie talkies. Although we rarely use them,
when we do we have no problems onboard or in port. They claim to work up to
3 miles, but I've learned that it's much shorter unless you pay the FCC or
someone for an extended area. I believe the "free" range is more like 1
1/2 - 2 miles.

I bought them at Radio Shack and paid about $40 for the pair including a
dual charger stand. If nothing else, they help when we shop in small markets
or large stores in the various ports. I tend to wander off in search of the
"perfect piece of crap" to spend my money on lol. I bought mine about 1 1/2
year ago.

Just remember you can not use them in foreign ports. Only in ports
under US authority.

What warning do the cruise line that rent them give about not using them on
shore? I'm sure people take them along with them where ever they go & take
their chances.

The only cruise line that I know that has walkie talkies available is
Disney, not really sure if they charge for them or not. I have not
heard of other cruise lines that have them available, but I have heard
of many people who bring their own.
