Brussels airport and the big black hole

Tue 06/02/07 - According to figures by Aviapartner, one of the
principal handling companies at Brussels Airport, the total number of
missing suit cases last year exceeded the figure of 45,000. The news
features in today's edition of Het Belang van Limburg.
(Belga)
Last year, exactly 45,653 passengers filed a complaint at Brussels
airport because one or several pieces of their luggage had gone
missing.

That's an increase of 10% compared to 2005.

Aviapartner says the increase is mainly due to the foiled attacks in
Great Britain at the end of August of last year.

In the subsequent chaos that also hit Brussels airport, over a
thousand suit cases went lost in a very short time span.
Most lost luggage is traced within 24 hours
Passengers that discover their luggage has not followed them to their
destination can either turn to one of the handling companies in the
arrivals area or the 'Lost and Found' desk.
(Belga)
Either desk will make up a report with the passenger's data and a
description of the suitcase(s).

According to Aviapartner, the majority of the suitcases is traced and
sent to the right destination within 24 hours.

"Most of the time, things go wrong when passengers have to change
planes", Christine Karels of Aviapartner says, adding that the
suitcase is then put on the next flight.

However, if the luggage hasn't turned up after 3 days, we give the
passenger a call and ask him for thorough description of his
suitcase."

Because all airline companies worldwide consult the same database for
lost property, simple indications such as the colour or type of the
suit case can help the case forward tremendously.

When after 5 days, there is still no sign of the luggage, the airline
company takes over the matter.
What do you think?

Have you had the misfortune of losing your luggage at Brussels airport?

I think the reporter is math challenged.
If there was a 10 percent increase from the previous year, then that
would be about 4150 more. The report indicates over a thousand went lost
in a short time due to the "foiled attacks". About 1/4 is not "mainly".

(2005) 41,500 + (increase) 10% = (2006) 45,650
