Hi Ed, The latest that I have heard is that they are considering turning her into a hotel ie Queen Mary in Europe or having her sail in the far East for Star. I don't think there has been any final determination but the chances of her sailing regularly from N. America are very slim. Thanks Karen...I have just joined the group to keep up the news regarding
the Blue Lady. Thanks for the invitation Ed -- "CupCaked" wrote in message ... "Ed Burke" wrote: Any updates on the future of the SS Norway? Many of us are skeptical (despite the rumors you might hear or read online . . . of course NCL would never admit the ship will not be back now) about the return of the SS NORWAY. I invite you to join us at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SS_NORWAY/ for the most up-to-date info out there. We've got subscribers who are "in the field" so to speak, with their finger on the pulse of this type of cruise news. I too and skeptical about her return, but I'm hoping she will give me one
chance to sail on her before she goes to anchor or the breakers. Here is one possible scenario I'd like to get your venerable RTC opinions on. First they refit her with a new boiler and do a minimal amount of upgrades and updates to her interior. Some new carpets a coat of blue on her hull and a good cleaning. Update some of her plumbing and electrical without rebuilding her. She comes back to the eastern Caribbean for a grand farewell tour for one year. By this time, NCL has a chance to put one or more newbuilds in the fleet to take it's place in the eastern Caribbean route. One good year pays for the updates and the new boiler. Then she goes to the far east as a casino ship or for cruises in that part of the world. Next time she has a major mechanical failure or can't meet new safety or governmental regulations, they tow her straight to LeHarve or where ever and tie her up. This way NCL can handle the write off for the ship and give SS Norway fans a chance to sail her one more time. Possible? MrTractor--------still thinks there is hope for Lady Blue................ Any updates on the future of the SS Norway? As others pointed out already, there seems to be no official news. But my personal view is: If they would plan anything else for the Norway than to bring her back to the Carribean, they would not wait as long as they do now before starting the repairs or modifications that would be neccessary. If the plan was to convert her to a "hotel", they could and would have started Months ago. Since she is still lying up in Bremerhaven in front of the Lloyd Werft, they really seem to be waiting for the boiler to arrive. And since it will be difficult to install this boiler (I guess they'd have to cut quite a big hole into the hull), I'm sure the Norway will do cruiseses for several years to come. Jochen,
I hope you're right. And what you said makes a lot of sense. Why wait to convert her to a hotel if that is your plan? Then again, maybe finding a suitable location is more difficult than expected. I will be sailing her if she sets sail again. Cupster, What NCL ships have you sailed? Have you tried the Sky, Sun, Dawn or Star. Is it the itinerary that bothers you, NCL in general or the Freestyle concept. I haven't been on the Star (yet), but I can tell you we thoroughly enjoyed the other three. You should consider the Dawn 10 day eastern out of your "backyard." That's a great ship and a great itinerary despite the fact that it leaves NY in the dead of winter and you have a couple of days of cold weather sailing. They have done some great things with the Dawn, but we actually enjoyed the Sun at least as much if not more. The Sky is very similar to the Sun, but just slightly smaller. Once you understand the pluses and minuses of Freestyle, it's hard to go back. Every I try traditional again, I'm disappointed. But to each their own. Perhaps we'll be sailing together again on the Norway as we did on the Rotty V (Rembrandt) in her final days! MrTractor "Jochen Lippert" wrote in message ... Just dreaming Ed, but I would love to see her restored and back to "full" power which she hasn't had for years. Then could you imagine a once a year "Great Transatlantic Race" against the QM2 and any other contender. The cruise lines could get top dollar plus a premium for these races. Mike Quint |

Jochen Lippert After starting my adult life in a shipyard, I got a whole new perspective on what's "difficult" to do. When you have a welding shop, riggers with adequate crane support, and the engineering talent to make sure you don't cut something you can't fix, cutting large accesses and rigging large objects in and out of ships is routine, and can be done amazingly quickly. None of this is a big deal compared with having the (obsolete, one-of-a-kind) boiler built. Many of the older ships I worked on had decks that looked like this over the engine rooms, where all the lines are welds where "hard patches" were cut for access, then welded back when the job was done: -------------------------------- | | | | -------|-------------------------------|------------ | | | | | | -------------|------------|---- | | | | | | -------|------------------|------------|------------ | | | | | -------------------|------------- | | | | | | | ----------------------------- 73, JohnW |
