Default tidbit regarding FF mile value.

I booked an award ticket from AA for a Japan Airlines ticket for a
friend in Japan from Narita to Shanghai (NRT to PVG)
The same flights are selling for about $1200 round trip (economy)
Even Side Step shows the cheapest on all carriers starting around $1100.
This is about 3 hours each way and with slightly less than 3 weeks
remaining until departure.
The mileage required was only 20,000. That is a value of 6 cents per mile.

BTW, my flights from SJC to SNA are around $150 on the weekend.
I get about 3000 miles per roundtrip, counting the booking bonus.
This works out to paying 5 cents per mile to travel ($1000 total) AND
get the miles and be over halfway to 2 AA upgrades.

bartering, selling or whatsoever of award tickets is forbidden by rules
of most airlines and can lead to canceling your account including all
miles. i assume you didnt charge your friend those 1200 dollars, because
otherwise you might be in trouble.
More info about miles can be found on flyertalk.com

Why would I charge a friend for a gift? I also do not condone the
selling of awards.
