Default South Beach - Hotels

Well why go to South Beach then ?
It's icky and not so wonderful as they say...
The beach is not even nice.
Better places north and south.

South Beach is also rife with homosexual activity. Personally, it makes me
upchuck my Wheaties when I see to 6 foot plus men holding hands and making
goo-goo eyes at each other. GET A ROOM, I say.

Any recommendations on hotels within the South Beach area where we can
walk and not have to drive?

There are lots of hotels right on Ocean Drive:
They vary in price and atmosphere so think about each. Some are great
if you're a 22 yr old and want to party all night ( The Clevelander,
Pelican) and others are not so centrally located , but are much
quieter.
http://www.gmcvb.com/visitors/accommodations.asp

www.hotels.com has 'em all too.

I'll be there in a few weeks myself for some fishing, then the Pro
bowl.
Narrow down what you are looking for and reply - I have a lot of
bookmarks. This is a few years old, but you'll get the idea: good
overview -
http://www.hemispheresmagazine.com/3...outh-beach.htm

I'm heading down there with my wife and we are in out mid-40's and what
we are trying to avoid is places like ( The Clevelander, Pelican) with
the 22 yr old crowd. I went to hotels.com and there are alot and it's
tough when you don't know what type of atmosphere the hotel might be
i.e. ( The Clevelander, Pelican). The last thing I want is hearing a
bunch of 22 yr olds screaming and yelling in the pool or hallway at 3
am.

Thanks
.

Ok - that's ONE item...

2. I still don't know you're price range ( ON Ocean Drive is NOT cheap in
Jan/Feb), but I can tell you I've stayed at The Avalon in the past ( and
this time too). It's about $250/night+tax. Book online and if AAA or
other affiliations there are discounts. It's NOT in the middle of the
beach - more toward the channel. ... let me ask ...
3. Why South Beach ? What are you going to do there ? Relax ?
Peoplewatch? See the sights? Sit by the pool ? Have room service and a
massage ? etc.

Think about it and " on a map of the beach, do you care if ON Ocean Ave ?
Ocean view from room ? ( more $$)
What about one block back ? ...
http://www.avalonhotel.com/area-miami-beach.html

http://miami.hotelguide.net/hl1sb.htm

We've go fishing every Jan/Feb and have tried many on Ocean Ave and many
(most) are older places that are NOT up to " Marriot" standards. You're
paying for location. There are some newer ones that meet" Marriot
standards ", but VERY big $$$. I'd be hestitant to even summarize since
they change so much from year to year - sometimes overhauled/updated /
sometimes looks like nothing has changed at all - maybe not even vacuumed
since last year.
For instance, the Breakwater was being overhauled last year ( it needed
it) so it MIGHT be very nice now - or maybe still doing it ??
I'll leave that info to locals/ recent visitors.
We spend no time in the room so not important to us.
Look here for feedback on Avalon and you'll see what I mean: it depends
on what you need/want in a hotel. Some HATED it - Others said Good.

So at hotels.com, search for " SOUTH BEACH,FL " and if you've never
used hotels.com ( or similiar) they usually rank them by " whichever
gives best kickback to them", so choose YOUR option from the table (
price/distance,etc) , not their " suggestions".

Thanks Bobb and everyone else for their feedback. I checked the Avalon and
looked nice and then tried to book for the dates I'm going to be there and
DARN IT nothing available.

The price range I'm looking at is around 300 - 350 I'd even take a hotel on
a side street to Ocean Drive.

Tried online? You might try calling the hotel directly. There have
been times we've had success doing that when it appeared that there no
availability. It doesn't always work but there's little to lose trying
it.

Go to this link: http://www.gmcvb.com/visitors/ and check the Events
Calender for the dates you plan to be there. If there are major
conventions, sporting events, or festivals listed for the dates you'd
like to go then you might need to make 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choices.
If you try calling the front desk and can't obtain an acceptable
reservation, move on to the next choice. Sometimes Travel Agents have
unadvertised beds and rates. They can get you in for less than you
can. Best way to find one is still word of mouth.

You might also want to look at Ft. Lauderdale, check their Events
Calender. If something called "The White Party" is listed during the
time you plan to stay in South Beach, you may have a hard time finding a
vacancy in either Miami Beach or Ft. Lauderdale Beach. The White Party
is several days of food, fashion, entertainment and most of all Disco
and making new friends, for Gay Men. It is a major social event. It
doesn't matter if it's held in Ft. Lauderdale or, Miami's South Beach
the best hotels in both beach destinations will be booked, booked, and
booked.

Other events that produce similar log jams of tourists or fans include
Miami Dolphins games, Jimmy Buffett concerts, The Latin Grammys when
held in Miami, Gloria Estafan concerts, The Miami Film Festival to name
a few.

Whatever a person wants to think. I forgot to mention that several 1950s
style motels in Ft. Lauderdale, will claim to be the location where
Connie Francis stayed during filming of "Where the Boys Are". Smart
money is on The Worthington, now a gay guesthouse on North Birch. Still
others will insist that none of the film was shot in Ft. Lauderdale.
The main load of the film was shot in San Diego.

The only location listed in the Internet Movie Database is Fort
Lauderdale.

It would certainly be quite easy to tell if San diego was used by
simply watching the film as the San Diego beaches look very, very
different from Fort Lauderdales, as does the beachfront road.

The Elbow Room is still there in Fort Lauderdale, or was when I
was last there about eight years ago.
