Use of credit cards in Japan

I think it is only since this year that 7-eleven ATMs have started accepting
international cards, so yes, things have changed for the better.
The same applies to credit card use, as the situation has improved greatly
compared with 5 or 10 years ago. Even if the average Japanese person still
prefers to use cash (or their mobile phone), a lot of shops now accept
credit cards.
