antipaludics- long time in Gambia
Hello to everybody and sorry for my bad English,
I'm planning to move to Gambia for a long time and I would like to hear about your experiencie or advice about antipaludics in these cases. I don't want to take Lariam for so long time. Malarone is uncomfortable -you have to take it everyday- and too expensive... Do you know about alternative treatments? My Europeans friends living there don't take anything. They always have Artesunate (natural treatment derived of artemisine plant) at home and when they notice any symptom they take it for three days. This is the advice given to me by a volunteer Cuban doctor working there, but I'm a little afraid because I have had malaria when I was a child living in Gambia, and in 2003 when went for vacation (I had Artesunate but I had malaria when arrived to Spain and here it is not authorized, then I was treated with quinina 10 days in hospital). I will be very grateful if anybody can tell me about his experience and opinion. Thanks a lot and greetings from Gran Canaria, www.fatoumaria.com |

Hello, and please don't appologise for your English... It's a lot
better than my Spanish :-) I use doxycycline. It's cheap, and can be taken for long periods (teenagers are often on it for years for acne treatment). I have only one side-effect (sensitivity to the sun), but all the other drugs make me disoriented and causes shakes and balance problems which is dangerous in my job. I am VERY skeptical about homeopathic preparations. I know of at least two people who have DIED from malaria in spite of being on homeopathic "medicines", and many more people who have had malaria while on these "medicines". In my experience, I don't know of one person who has contracted malaria after following the conventional (Malarone, Mefloquine, Doxycycline, Paludrine/Chloroquine) prophylaxis methods. In every case where I meet people who get malaria there are three causes: 1) They took no precautions 2) They didn't follow the medication doses correctly 3) They took homeopathic medicines. As you know, malaria is very unpleasant, and it can kill remarkably fast. Don't take chances with your life please. (Apparently malarone can be stopped when you come home). Sorry, I'm having problems with my news server and cannot see all messages
in this group, hope you can read me. I have seen two answers by Google Groups, thank you very much. I will ask the doctor about doxycycline. They told me about Lariam, Resochin+Paludrine, Savarine, Resochin, and Malarone, but nothing about doxycycline... I will ask information about it. Thanks a lot for your opinions and best regards, Maica |
