Default Anyway to get airfare to Maui down?

My girlfriend and her two kids want to go to Maui early
July and stay for one week.

Her parents will be over there and have a condo
available so my girlfriend will NOT need to pay for
living space.

However, checking airfares right now, it appears the
going rate from St Louis Missouri to Maui is abt $800
per person.... or $2400 for all three of them..ouch!!

We live abt two hrs north of St Louis and four hrs
south of Chicago in Hannibal Missouri.

Anyway out of box ways to get this airfare down some?

Have you checked kayak.com? Also check flying from Chicago. It's
likely that if you wait the fare will be higher.

check if skyauction.com has any flights available for auction. Just be
warned; although I personally have had good experiences with them ( most
jsut accomodation), I have seen various people bitching about missed
connections/ flights not booked.

Ok thanks

Is it possible for a full size plain to fly direct into
Maui? Or must one change at Honolulu?

And.... is THAT the reason prices are higher? IOW....
if staying on Oahu would it be cheaper overall?

Possibly.

If you can get cheaply to Las Vegas, Oakland or Los Angeles, you can get
good discounts on direct flights to Maui, as well as some of the other
islands. Last summer I was able to book a flight to the Big Island from
Oakland on ATA (www.ata.com) for $250 round trip.

The best airlines to look at, in general, to get to the cities I
mentioned above inexpensively are Southwest (www.southwest.com) and US
Air www.usair.com). St Louis would be the better city to fly out of for
them. They do fly out of Chicago-Midway, but the prices are the same or
a little more than St. Louis.

Also look at Hawaiian Airlines and Aloha Airlines. They at times have
super discounts on direct flights from Las Vegas, LA, San Francisco, and
Oakland. ATA also has direct flights out of Las Vegas now.

Another source is Pleasant Holidays, a tour company
(www.pleasantholidays.com): They sometimes have deals on "flight only"
to Hawaii. The special deals are only from LAX or SFO airports.

Good Luck.

Hey now that's an idea!

Maybe get one of those cheap package deals to Vegas but
do NOT use the room or anything? Just use it to get to
Vegas to catch another plane to Hawaii?

Unfortunately, most of the junkets to Vegas are for less than a week's
stay, that is, arrive on Thursday and leave on Sunday, but it's worth a
look. You could get lucky. It's Vegas, after all.

I don't think there are any direct, non-stop flights from Chicago (or any
place west of Las Vegas or Phoenix) to any place in Hawaii.

As far as I've discovered, there is a stop in either Las Vegas, Oakland,
San Francisco or Los Angeles. However, from any of those, one can get
direct flights to The Big Island (Kona or Hilo), Maui (Kahului) or Oahu
(Honolulu). Of course, some airlines, not matter where they fly from,
only fly into Honolulu. You then catch another flight to your final
destination. This is more the norm.

And.... is THAT the reason prices are higher? IOW.... if staying on Oahu
would it be cheaper overall?

Not if you can stay for free on Maui like your original post indicated.

However, if you can get a direct flight to your final destination without
a stop in Honolulu, the air cost is less, usually.

I've flown San Diego to Maui on Hawaiian several times.
