The travel industry is missing an opportunity. Trim a few things, call
the business class plane tickets or whatever "executive light" or
something, pitch them at the business traveler who needs to get there
but who is conscious of cost, etc. Perception is everything. Have the
airlines laid off all of their marketing folks? Isn't this what they're
supposed to be doing?

Sorry travel people, but we taxpayers shouldn't be paying for bankers to
go on expensive junkets. If Bank of America needs to hold a conference,
let them do it in NYC. There's more than enough conference space right
there in their back yard.

There are often some less than obvious issues that result in a
conference costing less overall in a certain location.

You need to factor in where most people will be coming from. If the bank
is in NY and the conference attendees are all in NY, then yeah, hold it
in NYC.

BUT, if the bank is in new york and attendees come from all over the
place and flights/hotels to new york are quite expensive, then it may
cost less to move the new NY people to a less costly city where
attendees will save lots of money on flights/hotels

There are even cases where going to some beach resort ends up being
cheaper because of charter flight availability makes that resort much
cheaper than going to a boring city like Dayton or Cleveland where
policitians wouldn't dare criticise that connference.

Pretty much.

Some of the airlines haven't given up on marketing, are getting new
planes with useful features, i.e. power outlets at every seat, and still
serving meals, offering ways to get around the luggage fees, etc.

I see a lot of marketing by hotels. I.e. one hotel we've been to in Reno
keeps sending out promotions by e-mail and snail mail with deals that
are very good even for the leisure traveler.

The problem is that Bush created a downward spiral that'll be tough to
break out of.

Who're you kidding? Most of the attendees at a meeting held by a NYC
bank will be from the NYC area.

Bank of America is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Not New York.

Fine. Then let Bank of America have its annual conference in Charlotte.
I am sure it will be cheaper than Las Vegas or San Francisco.

How can you be sure ? When Nations Bank bought Bank of America, did they
shutdown all California offices where BoA was headquartered ?

And if this is to be a conference bringing in all very important
internaional customers, then you need to have a location that is easy to
get to from international locations.

Unless you know where attendees are coming from, you cannot "be sure" of
where the converence venue will be cheapest.

Even
better, the conference should be held via satellite so that people in

Yes. But there are limits. A lot of "business" at conferences is handled
outside of the formal presentations where you meet people, solidify
friendships and talk shop informally with your peers. This doesn't
happen with video conferencing.
